One side argues the flow of the Maheshvara Sūtras supports a certain sound: aiuṇ–ṛl̥k… The other side argues Sanskrit always keeps unique sounds for unique letters, so this vowel must have a distinct pronunciation too. Sounds like "Q" (ق), "Kh" (خ), "Gh" (غ), "Z" (ذ), and "F" (ف) exist in Urdu due to the nuqta, but these sounds did not originally have dedicated letters in the Devanagari script. Renowned poet and writer Sardar Ali Jafri was the first person to introduce special nuqta-based letters in Devanagari, allowing proper representation of these Urdu sounds in Hindi script. Before this, words with "Q" (ق) were often written with "K" (क), and "F" (ف) with "Ph" (फ), changing the pronunciation entirely. The addition of nuqta letters in Devanagari ensured that Urdu-origin words retained their authentic sounds in Hindi script.
