When someone on the hike asks: ‘At what tree is the campsite?’… you know it’s been a tough day.🤣 Some hikes remind you very quickly that the Drakensberg always has the final say. What started as a perfect morning quickly turned into a hot, humid grind, followed by one of the wildest windy nights I’ve experienced in the mountains. But that’s exactly what makes hikes like this unforgettable — big climbs, tough moments, and plenty of laughs along the way. Trail Details: • Distance: 13km one way • Elevation Gain: ±864m • Start: Monks Cowl Nature Reserve • Route Highlights: Crystal Falls, The Sphinx, Blind Man's Corner • Views of: Cathkin Peak, Sterkhorn • Camp: Keith Bush Camp at the base of Dragon’s Back near Gray's Pass The morning started off perfectly — cool air and clear skies as we made our way up past Crystal Falls. But as the hike continued the humidity crept in and the heat started building quickly. By the time we reached Blind Man’s Corner we all agreed it was time for a proper break before continuing toward Keith Bush Camp. From there the trail rolls deeper into the valley with incredible views and a few river crossings along the way. But those last 2km after the river crossing felt brutal. Whether it was the heat, dehydration, or tired legs — it definitely tested us. At one point a friend looked around and asked: “At what tree is Keith Bush Camp?” 🤣🤣 Safe to say we were all feeling it by then. Just when we thought the adventure was over, that night a massive wind storm rolled through camp. Tents shaking, wind roaring through the valley — easily one of the roughest nights I’ve experienced in the Berg. PS - Recreational, non-commercial group hike. Participants joined voluntarily as part of a social hiking community. #hiking #camping #mountains #backpacking #outdoor

It claims 1 out of every 3 climbers who attempt to summit it 💀 A staggering ~33% fatality rate, driven by extreme and unpredictable weather, earning it the ominous title of “The Silent Killer.” Only the extremely brave hearted can kiss its top, lest it will kiss your tomb. Crazy! right? Its fatality rate is 20–30 times higher than Everest’s, yet intriguingly, it was the first 8,000+ meter peak ever summited, way back in 1950. The mindset and grit of that expedition are brilliantly captured in Maurice Herzog’s book, Annapurna. That said, while the main summit is brutally unforgiving, the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek is far more approachable week long trek. Just be cautious with your knees as couple of folk’s from my group could not feel their knees while descending. All thanks to 1000s of stairs they have passing through the villages. December seems like a great time to go for ABC, so you’ve still got time if you need to witness the deadliest mammoth of all mountains, Annapurna itself. #trek #annapurna #snowtrek #nepal #annapurnabasecamp
