FOThe two most popular trails to hike to the top of LA’s tallest mountain are the Baldy Bowl (Ski Hut) Trail and the Devils Backbone (pictured here).
Personally, I prefer hiking up the ski hut trail as it’s a better workout — it’s almost 4 miles with almost 4k ft of elevation gain one way so it’s a good training hike too. But coming down the devils backbone trail is quite nice and frankly, it’s much easier on the knees.🥾

Tips: Look up trail conditions and fee areas before you head out. Devils Backbone recently implemented a $10 parking fee. Both trails get super crowded. Go early or in winter for maximum solitude.

TII participated in the Crazy Legs Trail Race 2025 and took second place for my age group and 28th finisher overall!! The race course went through an area called Devils Backbone in Loveland Colorado. I spent the majority of the race completely alone, as runners started dispersing in distance. At one point I was worried I’d taken a wrong turn! The trail was marked by chalk arrows and I was relieved when I finally saw the first aid station. I jumped over two snakes but made it back safely. Thank you Crazy Legs for an amazing and challenging event!

HIOh my gaaah Becky! Look at the empty backbone!
Back on the ridge……was nice to get the Devils Backbone all to ourselves..no waiting in line to cross the backbone and no newbies just standing in the middle of the narrow trail taking pics of themselves…ahhh this was a good day…brutal and hot but good.

LIDEVILS BACKBONE HIKING TRAIL. WEST LOVELAND
Short, small, medium, long. This hiking area is for any distance.
Runner, bikers,horse riders, walkers, hikers, hikers with kids, or dogs. This hike is welcome to ALL!
The Keyhole hike was a great way to bring in the Fall. Rock formations have a hidden arch way in West Loveland after a short FULL SUN hike.
Stay on trail for large reseededing of wild flowers and cactus. Rattlesnakes seem to like this area as well, the signs are not joking. Pack in pack out. Bathrooms and trash cans at trail head.
This is a permit area so make sure you pay your park fee or have your local parks pass.
