Both my parents taught me that in order for me to succeed, I needed to read widely and in depth so that I could pass exams, build a sharp mind and retain the quality of thinking that society needs in order to advance. When society progresses, it rewards those who contribute to its progress. As a journalist, my own success has allowed me to live a quality life, but that success is simply society rewarding the value I have given back through my work. My parents went on to say that we are all created by a supernatural force, a creator, but that creator has no time for us to keep shouting at him while doing nothing about our lives. He has given us land, minerals, intelligence, life and the opportunity to grow as a people. Yet this is where Africa continues to fail itself. Africans have more churches and mosques per square kilometre or per capita than any other continent, and yet there is nothing to show for it. Africa is arguably the continent with the greatest mineral wealth, yet it remains the poorest, with some of the least educated populations and the weakest culture of critical thinking, all while being saturated with religious institutions. Africans need to use their brains. They need to stop going to fake churches where they are conned into giving money to men who are simply enriching themselves. I am able to buy properties because I pay a deposit, apply for a mortgage and work hard to repay it. That is an option available to many: build, invest, create and improve your life. Or you can spend three or four days of your week in a church shouting while a priest or fake prophet grows rich off your desperation. He is the one using his mind and effort to improve his life, not you. And that, sadly, is the story of Africa: a continent full of potential, talent and resources, held back not by a lack of divine blessing, but by a lack of critical thought and a refusal to take responsibility for its own advancement. An important message for Africans from one of Africa’s richest industrialists and one of East Africa’s most influential business leaders, Narendra Raval, the Chairman of the Devki Group.
