TRThe World’s first “de-extinct” species is none other than the Dire Wolf… well kind of. Made famous by the hit tv series Game of Thrones, the dire wolf went extinct ~10,000 years ago. It lived across portions of North and South America and potentially into Eastern Asia. Dire wolves were not closely related to modern gray wolves but may have had a similar appearance, while possessing larger teeth and a stronger bite force. These characteristics would have helped them take on the larger herbivores such a western horses, ground sloths, and camels that existed at this time. Modern gray wolves also existed alongside the dire wolf but it is believed they were more generalist hunters able to sustain themselves on smaller prey and occupy higher elevations.
Scientists at Colossal Biosciences, @itiscolossal , modified the genome of a gray wolf based on the DNA from a 13,000 year old tooth and a 72,000 year old skull to “recreate” a dire wolf. As no DNA splicing or cloning took place, these wolves are not 100% identical and only share some unique features. We also will never know the exact behavioral or cultural characteristics developed by the original dire wolf packs (such as language or hunting techniques).
This is still a significant achievement as these improvements in genome editing could help improve the cloning process and one day lead to the real “de-extinction” of a species. It is important to acknowledge not all species extinctions are human induced. While it has been well documented humans played a major role in the mass extinction that occurred after the last ice age, especially in the Americas, some of these species may have been on their way out due to climate change. Whether the dire wolf was one of these has not yet been proven, however with most of their prey species still currently extinct it is unlikely and ill-advised that these wolves would be reintroduced to the wild anytime soon. WIThe Real-Life Dire Wolf Was a Beast 🐺❄️
We all know them from TV shows as giant fantasy monsters, but the Dire Wolf (Aenocyon dirus) was a very real animal that roamed the Americas until about 13,000 years ago.
While they weren't the size of horses like in the movies, they were significantly terrifying in their own right.
Built for Power: They were about the same height as modern Gray Wolves but much heavier and more muscular. Think of them as the "linebacker" version of a wolf.
Bone-Crushing Bite: Their jaws were built to crack bone. Paleontologists have found that their teeth were often worn down, suggesting they crunched through the skeletons of their prey (like horses and bison) to get every calorie.
They lived—and fought—alongside Sabertooth Cats. It’s a chilling reminder of how harsh the Ice Age really was.

CLDire Wolves went extinct. Are they back?
Depends who you ask. Scientists created these “Dire Wolf” (or, genetically altered grey wolf) pups using gene editing. They first extracted pieces of ancient Dire Wolf DNA from two fossils, and used that to map out their genomes.
Then, they compared that to the DNA of a bunch of different wolves and pinpointed the places that made Dire Wolves unique - like for example the LCORL gene, responsible for their larger size.
Then, using the DNA of a close relative, the Gray Wolf, they edited 14 genes that made Dire Wolves unique - and swapped this DNA into an egg that was then fertilized and put into a surrogate dog. The (adorable) pups are larger, more muscular and have white coats and this unique howl...
The big hope is to one day restore some of the world’s lost biodiversity.
This company also created the “woolly mouse” and plans to make more species as well.

TIThe dire wolf once roamed an American range that extended as far south as Venezuela and as far north as Canada, but not a single one has been seen in over 10,000 years, when the species went extinct. Plenty of dire wolf remains have been discovered across the Americas, however, and that presented an opportunity for a company named Colossal Biosciences.
Relying on deft genetic engineering and ancient, preserved DNA, Colossal scientists deciphered the dire wolf genome, rewrote the genetic code of the common gray wolf to match it, and, using domestic dogs as surrogate mothers, brought three dire wolf pups into the world during three separate births last fall and this winter—effectively for the first time de-extincting a line of beasts whose live gene pool long ago vanished.
