The double-slit experiment, first performed by Thomas Young in 1801, is one of the most important milestones in physics, both in classical wave theory and in quantum mechanics. It consists of shining light through two narrow, closely spaced slits and observing the result on a screen. What appears is not just two bright regions, but a pattern of interference, with alternating bright and dark fringes. This behavior can only be explained if light is treated as a wave, supporting Huygens’ wave theory and challenging Newton’s corpuscular view. More than a century later, modern versions of the experiment were carried out with electrons, atoms, and even large molecules, showing that, even when particles are sent one by one, they gradually build the same interference pattern over time. This reveals that each particle has a wave-like nature, described by a wave function, while at the same time behaving as a localized particle when detected on the screen. The experiment is therefore central in many areas: in wave physics, it clearly illustrates diffraction and interference; in optics, it allows the measurement of wavelengths and the study of light propagation; and in quantum mechanics, it highlights the wave–particle duality, which lies at the heart of modern physics. Beyond that, it raises profound questions about the nature of reality and the role of the observer. For this reason, the double-slit experiment is much more than a classroom demonstration: it is a true window into the foundations of contemporary science.

When a beam of light passes from one medium into another it changes direction. This bending is called refraction, and it happens because light is obeying a deeper rule of nature: the principle of least action. According to this principle, light always follows the path that takes the least time, not necessarily the shortest distance. That’s why a beam entering plastic from air bends, because it moves slower, and it adjusts its path to keep the total travel time as short as possible. This behavior is mathematically described by Snell’s Law, which relates the angles and speeds of light in different media: n₁ sin(θ₁) = n₂ sin(θ₂) Where "n" is the refractive index and "θ" is the angle of incidence or refraction. Snell’s Law was first formulated by Willebrord Snellius in 1621, though earlier ideas date back to Ptolemy and Ibn Sahl. It wasn’t until centuries later that scientists realized this wasn’t just geometry. It was a physical consequence of light optimizing its own path, a concept later unified by Fermat’s Principle and the calculus of variations in physics. --- 💡 Learn More: Fermat’s principle - Britannica https://www.britannica.com/science/Fermats-principle [Sources] (🎞 DM) (🎼 Particles [Slowed] - Villiam Lane ) (✍️ Description) 1. Ever wondered why you can hear music from another room even without seeing the speaker? That’s thanks to diffraction! Sound waves bend around corners and through openings because their wavelengths are large. Light waves, on the other hand, have tiny wavelengths, so they don’t bend much—creating shadow regions instead. But if the opening is super small, even light can diffract just like sound! #Physics #Lightwave #DiffractionExplained #STEMLearning #minutesphysics#jee #neet
