Most older mechanical odometers were built with only six digits. That means the highest number they can show is 999,999 miles.
So when the car reaches the next mile, something interesting happens.
Instead of breaking or getting stuck, the odometer simply rolls back to 000,000 and continues counting from the beginning again. The internal gears keep moving just like they always have.
It works exactly the same way as when the numbers switch from 19,999 to 20,000 or from 59,999 to 60,000. The mechanism inside is designed to keep cycling through the numbers.
It is not really about manufacturers not expecting cars to last that long. It is simply the physical limit of a six digit odometer design.
As long as the gears are not worn out, the system will just keep turning and counting miles like normal.
Pretty simple engineering, but still cool when a car actually reaches that milestone.
