While the country was celebrating 50 years of independence, Mani Ratnam dropped Dil Se.., the final piece of his heavy-hitting political trilogy that started with Roja and Bombay. It wasn’t your typical Bollywood romance. Set against the gritty reality of the insurgency in the Northeast, the film used the “seven shades of love” from Arabic literature to track the chaotic journey of Amar and Meghna, moving from simple attraction all the way to a final, tragic obsession. The soundtrack is basically the gold standard for Indian music. A.R. Rahman and Gulzar created something that felt lightyears ahead of its time, and “Ae Ajnabi” is the soul of that album. No strings, no marriage, just the moment. But of course, love has other plans. What makes the film quietly brilliant is its parallel story. Ganapathy and Bhavani, the elderly couple they live with, are everything Aadi and Tara claim they never want to be. And yet watching Ganapathy care for his wife through Alzheimer’s with that kind of steady, unshakeable devotion slowly dismantles every argument the younger two have built around themselves. Mani Ratnam doesn’t preach it. He just shows it, and lets you feel it. Nithya Menen is the heartbeat of this film. She plays Tara with this infectious warmth and naturalness that makes you forget you’re watching a performance. Dulquer is all charm and ease. And AR Rahman’s soundtrack, especially Kaara Aattakkaara and Aye Sinamika, doesn’t just accompany the film, it breathes with it. Is it Mani Ratnam’s deepest work? No. The conflict stays deliberately light, and the ending plays it safe. But OKK was never trying to be Dil Se or Iruvar.
