Australian Kelpie vs Dingoes: The Night Watch 🚁🐕🌒 Captured by a farmer’s night-vision helicopter — one brave Kelpie guarding a newborn lamb while two dingoes stalk from the shadows. 👀 The air is still, the danger is real. Every heartbeat counts as the wild eyes draw closer, testing the courage of one small guardian. ⚔️ But the Kelpie doesn’t flinch — loyalty runs deeper than fear. He’s not just protecting a lamb… he’s protecting a life that trusts him completely. 🐑❤️ Out here in the Australian outback, heroes don’t wear capes — they wear dust, scars, and unwavering courage. 🇦🇺🔥 💪 Watch till the end — the night reveals who the true protector really is. Follow @FlockWar for more stories of courage, loyalty, and the unspoken war between guardians and predators. 🐾 #FlockWar #Kelpie #dingoes #australianoutback #livestockguardian #shepherddog #guardianinstinct #dogsofthewild #naturebattle #predatorvsprotector #ancientwarofnature #animal #animals #dog #dogs #shepherddogs #predator #predators #sheep #lamb

The Dingo Contrary to popular belief, dingoes (Canis lupus dingo) are not wild canids endemic to Australia. Dingoes are domestic dogs that were brought to Australia with seafaring humans. Though humans arrived earlier in Australia during the Pleistocene, by the time dingoes arrived, boats would have been needed to cross the 50km of open sea present even at the lowest sea level. This how we know the dingo came with later migrations of humans. The oldest archaeological remains of the dingo date to around 3.5 thousand years BP.  These dingoes look almost identical to modern ones, which makes sense, as the dingo was the only canid present in Australia until the arrival of Europeans, and little to no genetic admixture would have occurred. According to genetic studies, the dingo is most similar to South Asian dogs, while skeletal morphology points to Indian pariah dogs and wolves. Other studies suggest it is closely related to the New Guinea singing dog. Nevertheless, the data from these studies suggest a split from Asian dogs occurring around 6,000 years BP. With this knowledge, we now know (genetic presenting) domestic dogs arrived with humans in Australia at least 6k years ago, and at some point returned to the wild (perhaps on accident or were set free), and began to fill an ecological niche that had not yet been occupied. So within a few thousand years, domestic dogs essentially returned to being wild wolves on a continent that had previously never seen a canid. This also lead to a drastic decline in thylacine populations, as dingoes were more efficient and pervasive. That’s how rare it is to see a stray or feral dog in the bush. Dr Kylie Cairns, a conservation biologist from UNSW Science and lead author of a DNA study looking into the genetics of dingoes, has confirmed feral dogs are not an established population in the wild. The team found 99% of wild canines tested were pure dingoes or dingo-dominant hybrids. It’s time for dingoes to be respected as a native species everywhere in Australia. Statement on the Killing of Dingoes on K’gari Repost @defendthewild @dingoculture “We are devastated by the Queensland Government’s decision to kill a family of dingoes on K’gari following the tragic death of Canadian backpacker Piper James. First and foremost, we extend our deepest condolences to Piper’s family and friends. We cannot begin to imagine the pain and grief they are experiencing following her death. We also wish to acknowledge that Piper’s family and friends have consistently stated her opposition to culling, and that Piper herself would have been devastated by this outcome for the dingoes. On Sunday afternoon of a long weekend, the Queensland Government announced it would kill the dingoes found near Piper’s body on K’gari. This decision was made without consultation with the Traditional Owners and rightful custodians of the island, the Butchulla people - for whom the dingo, known as Wongari, holds deep cultural significance. The Butchulla people have cared for K’gari for thousands of years, ensuring sustainability, coexistence and balance. In just the last 100 years - since tourism was introduced to the island - these foundations have been profoundly disrupted. We extend our sincere condolences to the Butchulla people for the loss of Wongari - their Countrymen - a loss that will be deeply felt within the community. We are so sorry. It is critical to understand that the dingoes of K’gari do not behave like other wild dingo populations across mainland Australia. The island has experienced an enormous increase in tourism over recent decades, forcing dingoes into close and unavoidable proximity with humans. Illegal feeding, unsecured food, fish scraps and bait have conditioned dingoes to associate people with food, increasing the risk of negative interactions. This is a human-created problem. Despite this, the response has once again been to punish wildlife for the consequences of poor management decisions by our Government departments.” This has saddened Animal Watch as there was no evidence the dingoes killed the backpacker. She absolutely could have drowned so we feel this is a let down for wildlife. #dingo #dingoes #queensland #australia
