Carl Th. Dreyer was obsessed with interiors. He wanted his sets to feel realistic, as if the camera was spying on the homes of real people. In 1925, he directed “Master of the House,” and found innovative ways to create a realistic sense of space, breaking away from the proscenium style of sets used in the 1910s. A major part of his technique were wild walls, which allowed him to show a small apartment from any possible angle. With that, Dreyer constructs a fully surround, 360° space through camera placement and editing. By the end of the film, he’s shown us every inch of the room and incorporated it into the drama. The result is an intimate portrait of domestic life - a true “chamber film”. If you’re a filmmaker interested in interiors and chamber settings, there’s no better filmmaker to study than Dreyer. Nolan doesn't own a phone or use email. Writes scripts by hand. His directing philosophy: technology fragments focus and prevents deep creative thought. Practical effects over CGI. Film over digital. His directing resists modern convenience. #director #christophernolan #directing #analog #filmmaking

Is this Vince Gilligan’s best series? Vince Gilligan’s Pluribus is already a resounding success with audiences, which should come as no surprise for a series from the creator of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Gilligan’s series are distinguishable in part due to the strong filmic influences they possess, frequently paying homage to classics and utilising dynamic and unorthodox camerawork. Right from the first episode of Better Call Saul, this couldn’t be clearer, with Jimmy even directly references Network when castigating Howard Hamlin in their first scene together. But in the brief quiet (or chaos) that bookends that encounter, we can see the true power of visual storytelling As Jimmy prepares for the meeting, Gilligan interjects the moment with a jarring angle of a dented trashcan, with Jimmy turning to acknowledge it. It’s a seemingly innocuous shot, until after the meeting, when Jimmy unleashes his rage on the trashcan in a whirlwind of kicks and stomps. As he tires himself out, the camera slowly dollies out to reveal a woman from the meeting. Unperturbed by Jimmy’s tantrum, she calmly smokes in noir-esque lighting before being joined by Jimmy. The two tacitly share a cigarette, briefly bicker, and then part ways – although the woman chooses to tidy up after Jimmy. This ostensibly uneventful moment is a perfect example of concise visual storytelling; Gilligan trusts the audience to piece together information, telling us everything about Jimmy and Kim’s relationship with barely any words – and not even a mention of Kim’s name #film #cinema #vincegilligan #bettercallsaul #directing

Learning to give good notes is the real art of being a director. Because a lot can be coming at you really quickly on set, and you just need to know how to hold onto what’s important, and let go of what’s not. #filmmaking #fail #funnycouples #comedyreels #directing

Forget the myth of the 50/50 collaboration! 🤯 This breakdown reveals what happens when the director has an *impossibly* clear vision—storyboarded, set-dressed, and ready to go. It’s less about brainstorming and more about the actor's deep dive: internalizing the *vibe* and delivering precision, not just lines. A fascinating look at creative execution and the power of an unshakeable artistic blueprint.
