While I know it’s well intentioned, can we please start thinking of other adjectives to describe disabled people, other than “brave”, “strong” and (the one that makes me cringe the most) “inspirational”. Besides almost always coming off as patronising, when words are so overused, they completely lose their meaning. If me having a disability is all it takes to be considered inspirational, then frankly the bar is pretty low. These words also come with the wide presumption and gross generalisation that disabled life must inherently be so miserable that the fact that I haven’t ended it yet, AND better yet I’m even smiling 😱 is obviously the epitome of strength and bravery? And of course there’s nothing like a nice disability story to help you realise your own life doesn’t suck so bad, right? Again I know you mean well, but next time you want to call a disabled stranger any of these words just stop and think of the ‘why’. If it’s simply because they’re disabled, then please just don’t.

Disabled people are behind some of our most essential everyday innovations. 🎞️ by @chronicallyjenni From electric toothbrushes to voice assistants, ramps to automatic doors—these weren’t just designed FOR disabled people, they were often created BY the disability community to solve real problems. It’s called the curb cut effect: when accessibility features designed for disabled people end up benefiting everyone. That ramp you use for your suitcase? Originally built for wheelchair users. Those captions you rely on when watching videos in public? Created for the Deaf and hard of hearing community. Disability drives innovation. Accessibility truly helps everyone. #CurbCutEffect #AccessibilityHelpsEveryone

I’m disabled, and it’s not a bad thing to say it! 🤗 Regarding “person with a disability” and “differently-abled” though, if you’re disabled and like those terms for yourself, of course you are free to use them! [Video Description: Sarah Todd, a young white woman with long blonde hair, is facing the camera. She is wearing a white top with blue embroidery. As the sound plays, she lip syncs to the words. When the sound says “I like you! Have a cupcake!” text boxes that say “Disabled” appear on the screen. When the sound says “Ewwww,” a text box appears that reads “Person with a disability, differently-abled, handicapable, r word.”]
