Did you know this? 🩵 This turtle? 🐢 A walking (swimming) conservation success story. Green sea turtles have officially been removed from the global endangered list. Proof that protecting our oceans actually works. Now imagine what else we could bring back if we tried harder. Obviously they still face risks and threats and the work being done for the good of the ocean and these beauties should continue but how good is that to hear 👂 Share this with someone who needs hope for the planet 🌊 #GreenSeaTurtle #OceanConservation #MarineLife #SaveTheTurtles #OceanLovers

This sea turtle’s mouth is a terrifying marvel… A biological marvel designed to help sea turtles eat is proving fatal in a plastic-polluted ocean, trapping debris that cannot be expelled. Inside the mouth of a sea turtle lies a haunting array of sharp, cone-like spikes known as papillae. While they look like something out of a horror film, these structures are actually a biological “reverse filter” found in species like leatherbacks and loggerheads. Because turtles swallow massive amounts of seawater along with their prey, they must expel the water without losing their meal. These inward-facing spikes act as a trap, ensuring that food remains safely in the esophagus while excess water is vomited out. However, this ancient evolutionary advantage has turned into a modern death sentence due to the five trillion pieces of plastic currently littering our oceans. When a turtle accidentally ingests a plastic bag or fragment, the papillae make it physically impossible for the animal to spit it back out. The debris becomes permanently lodged in their digestive tract, leaching toxic chemicals and causing potential starvation. With plastic taking up to 600 years to biodegrade, this anatomical trap highlights the devastating and lasting impact of human waste on marine life. source: Bakar, F. (2019). Sea turtles have terrifying spikes in their mouths which make it hard to spit out plastic. Metro.

Did you know Sea Cucumbers have powerful suction and can latch themselves onto other marine life like this Green Sea Turtle? This girl seemed to be swimming towards me for help and I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to help her! It is important to never touch sea turtles, read their behavior to identify if your presence is one of acceptance or stress and respect their space if it is the latter. From the way this girl hung around after I felt she appreciated the help! Would you help a sea turtle that needed help? #seaturtle #turtlerescue #turtlesofinstagram #trending #marinelife #saveouroceans #osmo #action5pro #southpacific #nature #rotd #cookislands

Seven devastating facts about sea turtle fishing and bycatch 🐢💔 Sea turtles are dying by the hundreds of thousands in fishing operations: 1. Over 250,000 sea turtles are killed in fishing gear annually – Longlines, trawl nets, and gillnets trap and drown turtles worldwide. This massive death toll is pushing species toward extinction 2. They drown slowly and painfully in underwater nets – Sea turtles must surface to breathe. Trapped in nets, they struggle desperately for 15-40 minutes before drowning in terror and agony 3. Longline hooks pierce through their mouths and throats – Turtles mistake baited hooks for jellyfish and swallow them. Hooks embed in sensitive tissue, causing infections, starvation, and slow death 4. Shrimp trawlers are the deadliest threat – Bottom trawling for shrimp kills more sea turtles than any other fishing method. “Turtle excluder devices” often fail or aren’t used at all 5. All seven sea turtle species are now threatened or endangered – Decades of fishing bycatch have decimated populations. Some species have declined by over 90% and may disappear within our lifetime 6. Many are intentionally killed for meat and shells – Despite protections, sea turtles are still hunted illegally. Their meat is eaten and shells are sold as jewelry and decorative items 7. They can live 80+ years but most die as juveniles – Sea turtles don’t reproduce until 20-30 years old. Fishing kills them before they can breed, ensuring continued population collapse Stop eating seafood. Sea turtles can’t survive commercial fishing. Just a green sea turtle doing what they do best — mowing the ocean lawn 🌱🐢 These gentle grazers help keep seagrass beds healthy, which supports entire coastal ecosystems. Ocean gardeners at work! Reel Description: An underwater educational reel filmed in clear, shallow ocean water. A green sea turtle swims slowly across a rocky ocean floor, gently moving its front flippers and lowering its head to graze on algae. Rainbow wrasse swim around the turtle as it’s feeding. Sunlight ripples across the sandy bottom and the turtles shell. The water is a clear turquoise color. On-screen text reads, ‘How do green sea turtles help Florida’s coral reefs and seagrasses?’ As the turtle continues swimming and grazing, new text appears explaining, ‘Green sea turtles are grazers, meaning they “clean” the reefs by eating algae.’ The video remains focused on the turtle’s natural behavior within its habitat. Toward the end of the reel, additional on-screen text states, ‘Also, they graze on seagrasses, which helps keep the meadows healthy!’ The reel emphasizes the ecological role of green sea turtles and their importance to healthy marine ecosystems.

This sea turtle was in full relaxation mode, resting on the ocean floor while tiny yellow fish carefully cleaned its face. The turtle stayed completely calm and tolerant, almost like it was enjoying a spa treatment. Moments like this show just how peaceful and trusting marine life can be when left undisturbed. FUN FACTS – SEA TURTLES • Sea turtles regularly visit cleaning stations to remove parasites, algae, and dead skin • They can slow their heart rate dramatically while resting, helping them conserve energy • Turtles are known to recognize safe locations and will return to the same cleaning spots repeatedly • When relaxed, turtles often remain completely still to allow cleaners to do their job properly FUN FACTS – THE CLEANING FISH • These small yellow fish are often juvenile wrasse or surgeonfish • They specialize in eating parasites, dead skin, and bacteria from larger animals • Cleaning fish learn early which species will tolerate close contact • Some cleaners can service dozens of large marine animals in a single day THE MUTUAL BENEFIT (SYMBIOSIS) • The turtle gets a healthier shell, skin, and eyes with fewer parasites • The fish get a reliable food source without needing to hunt • Both species benefit without harming each other • This type of relationship is called mutualism and is vital for reef health HASHTAGS #SeaTurtle #OceanLife #MarineSymbiosis #UnderwaterWorld KEYWORDS sea turtle cleaning cleaning station marine symbiosis reef behavior underwater wildlife ocean relaxation scuba diving usa american ocean wildlife florida reef diving hawaii scuba diving key largo scuba california ocean life pacific ocean wildlife atlantic ocean marine life usa marine biology ocean documentary usa

Turtles are often seen as calm, harmless creatures, symbols of patience and peace—but like any wild animal, they can attack under certain circumstances. These attacks range from completely harmless to genuinely harmful, depending on the species, situation, and human behavior involved. Understanding this difference is important to avoid unnecessary fear as well as real danger. Most turtles are non-aggressive by nature. When they “attack,” it is usually a defensive reaction rather than an act of hostility. A turtle may hiss, snap, or bite if it feels threatened, handled roughly, or cornered. In many cases, these bites are harmless—meant to scare rather than injure. Small freshwater turtles or pet turtles often bite out of stress, confusion, or hunger, and the injury is usually minor. However, some turtle attacks can be harmful. Large species like snapping turtles or certain sea turtles have powerful jaws designed to crush hard shells and tough food. If provoked, mishandled, or approached too closely—especially during nesting season—they can deliver serious bites that cause deep wounds. These incidents are rare, but when they occur, they are often the result of human interference rather than unprovoked aggression.
