RAMURAL TRANSFER METHOD: The Doodle Grid! 🎨
When I first started painting murals, the scale was always pretty intimidating and I had a hard time finding resources online that helped with that. I love sharing my knowledge so I thought I’d break down this low-tech method of getting your design on the wall.
This method of transfer is especially useful to know when you’re first starting out mural painting because you don’t need a ton of technology, or fancy tools/resources. I taught this method as part of my last Mural Mentorship Program and they did so well with it!
Here’s my step by step:
1. Doodle all over your wall:
Fill it with random shapes (letters, symbols, squiggles). We kept ours ~4” for a detailed design.
2. Take a straight-on photo:
As flat + centered as possible!
3. Add your design digitally:
Drop your mural artwork on top (iPad or Photoshop)
4. Line it up:
Stretch + distort until it matches your wall perfectly
5. (Optional) Add an outline layer:
Game changer if you’re working with a team so there’s no confusion on what goes where.
6. Use it as your guide:
Send to your phone (or print it out!) + match it on the wall
7. Paint!
Background first, then build your shapes, eventually the doodles disappear!
Pro tips:
🎨 Use a light version of one of your mural colours for the doodles
🎨 Keep strokes thin for no paint texture buildup
🎨 Design to scale (ex: 20’x8’ wall = 20”x8” file)
