داستان فیلم درباره زنی است که به جرم قتل همسرش به زندان محکوم میشود.او مطلع میشود که قتل صحنه سازی توسط همسر بوده تا به او خیانت کند. او با اطلاع از وجود قانون "عدم مجازات مجدد برای یک جرم" به دنبال کشتن او میرود.

نقش اصلی این فیلم به مگ رایان و بروک شیلدز پیشنهاد شد که قبول نکردند.میشل فایفر هم به خاطر بازی در فیلم داستان ما (۱۹۹۹) (همراه با بروس ویلیس) نتوانست نقش را قبول کند. جودی فاستر نیز به دلیل بارداری از نقش کناره گیری کرد و در نهایت نقش به اشلی جاد رسید.
