What a day in Detroit! For the second year in a row, hundreds of DPSCD students from five schools crossed the finish line at the Detroit Free Press Kids Marathon, presented by Priority Health. This wasn’t just a sprint to race day; it was a marathon of moments that got us here. From training and shoe fittings to deliveries, 25.2 miles logged by each student, and one unforgettable final mile together! Facilitated by the DPSCD Foundation, this partnership brought together the Detroit Free Press Marathon, Priority Health, Black Men Run, and the DPSCD Athletics Department to make it all possible. A big thank-you to Bates Academy, Davison Elementary-Middle School, Golightly Education Center, John R. King Academic and Performing Arts Academy, Mackenzie Elementary-Middle School, and Mark Twain School for Scholars for helping our students go the distance over the years. When the community comes together, our students rise stronger, prouder, and ready for whatever comes next. Join us at www.dpscdfoundation.org! 🎥: @robinschwartzpr

#NEW: The Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) Foundation has announced over $32 million in funding to revitalize two historic Detroit schools: Cooley High School and Davis Aerospace Technical High School. Cooley High School Redevelopment: Closed since 2010, Cooley High School is set to be transformed into a district and community-based sports facility aimed at creating sports opportunities for DPSCD students and their families. The $25 million project, made possible with $15 million from a State of Michigan appropriation, will fund the planning, design, and construction of: • An outdoor football field • An outdoor track • Updated parking lots • Outdoor community and green spaces The DPSCD Foundation will raise the remaining $10 million to complete the project, which includes architectural designs, fencing, lighting, and a football field and track stadium for Cody High School and local youth football programs. Plans also include preserving part of the original Cooley building for locker rooms, a weight room, community gathering spaces, and an alumni dedication area. Future expansion may feature multiple basketball and volleyball courts and an indoor facility for football, track, lacrosse, and soccer. The project is expected to be completed by 2026. Davis Aerospace Technical High School Returns to Detroit City Airport Davis Aerospace Technical High School, a workforce development school that prepares students for aviation careers, will return to its original home at Coleman A. Young International Airport (Detroit City Airport) for the first time since 2013. The $7 million project, funded by a State of Michigan appropriation and DPSCD, aims to restore hands-on flight and aircraft maintenance training to its former location. The new school building, projected for completion in 2027, will provide direct access to airplanes, expanding the aviation and engineering curriculum. The relocation is expected to double the school’s enrollment capacity to 200 students.

We were honored to welcome Ms. Michelle Parker, Assistant Director of the Family and Community Engagement Department at Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD), and her team for a tour of our YouthUp Mobile Center. Ms. Parker leads the district’s McKinney-Vento Homeless Program, which ensures students experiencing insecurites have equal access to education and the supports they need to thrive. Her work aligns deeply with our mission at Detroit Phoenix Center—removing barriers, meeting immediate needs, and making sure young people can focus on learning, growing, and building their futures. Moments like these remind us of the joy in what we do: connecting with partners who share our vision of equity, dignity, and opportunity for every student. 💫 #detroitphoenixcenter #everyyoutheverymile #dpscd #detroityouth

What a sweet treat.🍭💖 More than 400 Durfee Elementary-Middle School students enjoyed a classic Valentine's Day dance during Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD)'s annual count day!♥️♥️ From face painting to balloon artistry, music, a photobooth, raffle prizes, and tasty snacks, there was something for everyone. Seeing the joy on these young scholars' faces warms our hearts! 😊 Did you know that chronic absenteeism is a crisis in DPSCD? However, the work we do through our opportunity hubs in partnership with local schools and community members is setting the stage to break this cycle for so many children and families throughout our city. By providing access to high-quality afterschool programming, workforce development/job training and health & wellness resources right in the heart of a neighborhood as well as by building intentional and meaningful relationships with the schools in our backyard, Life Remodeled and our partners are helping students get excited about going to school while also making a world of opportunities available to their parents. Southeastern High School officially opened its new Career & Technical Education (CTE) Annex, an 11,000-square-foot facility that stands as the first completed project under Detroit Public Schools Community District’s (DPSCD) $700 million Facility Master Plan. The annex, celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by students, educators, and community leaders, is designed to prepare students for real-world careers while reaffirming the district’s commitment to building modern, 21st-century learning environments. The state-of-the-art facility will expand opportunities for Southeastern students through programs such as advanced manufacturing, a welding lab with industry-standard equipment, a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) lab for precision training, and collaborative learning spaces that encourage hands-on innovation. Superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti, Principal Maurice El-Amin, and Southeastern’s Student Body President, Miss Ellis, each spoke to the crowd about the impact of the project and the broader vision it represents. “This apex project was done within time and within budget,” Superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti said. “Today meets so many of our priorities and our expectations to transform the district. In the city, we do not have a talent gap, but an opportunity gap.” For students, the excitement was tangible. “We feel special because we know we are special,” said Miss Ellis, addressing her peers. “I care about opportunities that can move us forward. We are excited to use our imagination for things that matter. Welding gives us the chance to create and build — and it’s not just another class, it’s an opportunity to move into the future.” With its combination of technical programs and collaborative spaces, the annex ensures that students leave not only with diplomas but with the skills and confidence to thrive in college and careers.
