Before starting my DPT program, I used to study for hours, listen to music while highlighting, and rewrite notes thinking it would help me remember. While that worked in some cases, it didn’t work for me in DPT school & I had to relearn to study and make the best use of my time to make sure it sticks. Active Recall and the Second Brain method has helped me a lot to retain information and understand what we learn. Active Recall = forcing yourself to retrieve information without looking at your notes. Instead of rereading, you quiz yourself, teach it out loud, or write answers from memory. It’s how you build real retention. Nowadays, instead of listening to music while driving, I use that time to blurt out loud everything that I know & try to visualize the lecture slides in notes to what I’m saying. Another example is I would have someone quiz me and then go back to my notes later to see what I got wrong. The Second Brain = organizing knowledge outside your head so you can find, connect, and use it. For me, I use Notability to organize all of my notes. I write down notes from lectures, then compile them into separate files depending on what I’m studying for, and add images from Essential Anatomy app with labels as needed. It’s not just about making your notes pretty but rather building a system where everything has a purpose and is easy to recall when I need it. This isn’t content you can memorize and move on from. This is stuff that sticks with you into the clinic, the boards, and every single patient interaction. So every note I take now has to help me think, not just study. If you’re in PT school or any healthcare program, I’m sure you also realized you need to start learning how to learn. Let me know if you’re building your second brain too, or any tips on how you study best!
