MIIn the evening kids drew with chalk on the sidewalk.
Hopscotch. Flowers. Little houses.

In the morning Joe came and erased everything.
Back to clean pavement.
⠀
Kids were angry:
“Why does he erase it? We made it look nice!”
⠀
Parents complained:
“Grumpy old man. Ruining kids’ fun.”
⠀
Joe stayed quiet.
And kept wiping the sidewalk.
⠀
For 15 years.
⠀
Then he passed away. A new janitor came. Young. Friendly.
⠀
Kids drew on the sidewalk.
He didn’t erase it.
⠀
“Let it stay. It looks nice.”
⠀
A week later the school principal called him in.
⠀
“Why aren’t you cleaning the drawings?”
⠀
“Why would I? The kids worked hard on them.”
⠀
The principal sighed.
⠀
“Joe wasn’t erasing the kids’ drawings. He was erasing what teenagers wrote on top of them at night.”
⠀
The new janitor didn’t understand.
So he came to check in the evening.
⠀
At night teenagers, 14–16 years old, came with chalk.
⠀
They wrote curses.
Threats.
Insults.
Drew dirty pictures.
⠀
Right over the kids’ flowers and hopscotch squares.
⠀
In the morning little kids came to school.
And they would see it.
⠀
Joe came every day at 6 AM.
He wiped EVERYTHING away so the kids wouldn’t see the filth.

Yes, the children’s drawings disappeared too.
But he couldn’t erase only the bad words. It was all mixed together.

For 15 years he protected kids’ minds.
⠀
Silently.
Without explaining.
⠀
And everyone thought he was mean.
⠀
When the parents learned the truth, they were shocked.
Many went to his grave to say sorry.
⠀
We often judge people without knowing the reason.
⠀
We see the action.
But we don’t understand the motive.
⠀
Joe couldn’t explain it.
⠀
Because then he would have to tell kids about the ugly things written there.
And that was exactly what he was trying to protect them from.

A strong adult protects children.

Even when no one understands.

Located at the @ritzcarltonlaketahoe, Montesa is their recently opened cantina moderna that does everything in house—including hand pressing their corn tortillas fresh daily.
Chef Frias drew from family recipes & techniques learned while growing up in Mexico to craft the menu alongside executive chef Bean 🇲🇽
The menu isn’t huge (not a bad thing!) & what they serve they do very well!
