We spoke with Reggie, a resident of the Downtown Eastside, whose voice adds an important perspective to the ongoing conversation about homelessness in Vancouver. Project Hastings continues to document the challenges faced by unhoused and marginalized communities in the DTES through underrepresented voices, challenging stigma and inspiring informed compassion. We would also like to acknowledge that resident’s answers to interview questions are not necessarily reflective of what Project Hastings believes in, but we pride ourselves on listening and empathizing to first hand experiences. We encourage viewers to also do so. #projecthastings #homelessness #dtes #nonprofit #vancouver #downtowneastside #interviews

The deadline to remove tents along East Hastings Street in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside has passed with little change. The tents were ordered to be removed by Wednesday because of "numerous urgent safety concerns." Now, the city says the tents won't be removed until storage options to secure people's personal belongings are finalized. In a statement, Mayor Kennedy Stewart said that since the order, the city has increased resources for those living on the street, including creating space to store personal belongings, street cleaning, washroom access and peer support services. However, Stewart says while the city is assembling these supports, the operations require significant investments from senior levels of government. Stewart says he also reached out to the government of Canada asking for additional urgent housing funding. CBC spoke to residents in the Downtown Eastside to find out their opinions. #tentcity #dtes #downtowneastside #vancouver #bc #britishcolumbia #cbc #cbcnews

Big shouts to @mark.brand & the @saveonmeats crew🐷 for making this happen and everything they do for the community 🙌🏽 There’s been a bit of damage over the years but do you realize how much street cred a business has to have, when a mural painted on it, 3 years ago still remains in the downtown east side of Vancouver? That said…If you don’t know about the @abetterlifevan foundation Please check them out! After being forced out of low-cost housing by his landlord, Dino (Boomer) Bundy made a home in an electrical closet in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. He set up lights, turned a storage box into a bed and installed a lock. He said he was hoping to get into a drug treatment program and have a “normal life.” Instead, he died in a fire in the same closet where he was living. He had been offered space in another low-cost building, but says “it was more depressing” than the closet. A friend described the unit as disgusting. He wanted more secure, comfortable housing, so Boomer would also check in with social workers about availability. Boomer, 60, was half Black and half Indigenous. He was orphaned at five years old. After working on and off in Calgary, he made his way to Vancouver about 20 years ago. “There’s a whole bunch of stigmas involved in Boomer’s case,” activist Jean Swanson said. “There’s racism. There’s classism. There’s stigma against people that use drugs or stigma against people who are homeless.” Swanson is among the advocates who said Boomer’s life and death highlight the need for better housing solutions. “We need to force our political leaders to build the housing, to end the poverty, to provide a safe supply [of drugs],” she said. Nearly one week ago, Vancouver police and city staff moved into a Downtown Eastside encampment to dismantle and throw away belongings, tents and other structures that lined the sidewalks on Hastings Street. But as the CBC’s Justin McElroy shows us, the removal of tent encampments in the city is not something new. To read more about the 10 tent encampment removals in 10 years, tap the link in our bio. #downtowneastside #vancouver #dtes #britishcolumbia #cbcnews

What does real help actually look like? 👇 Jimmy points out, it’s not just giving someone a place to live — it’s giving them skin in the game and a way to take pride in what they do to grow. Without a stake, support only scratches the surface — people need a path to ownership, responsibility, and progress. Are we building systems that empower people — or just handing them handouts? Do you agree with Jimmy? Drop your thoughts below. 👇 Source: Dr. Julian Somers (YouTube) #Vancouver #DTES #HousingSolutions #Canada #Homelessness

Emergency crews are on the scene of two fires in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. The first, shown in the video, started around noon in Chinatown and was accompanied by reports of explosions. Acting Assistant Fire Chief Dan Nichols said the fire is at 218 Keefer Street, just off Main. The building consists of three storeys of apartments on top of a restaurant. He said the blaze started as a grease fire in an apartment kitchen around noon. Nichols said all the building’s occupants are safe, and crews are trying to find hotspots in the attic and roof. Vancouver police say traffic near the scene of the fire is heavily disrupted, and drivers are advised to avoid the area. The second fire, reported on Twitter by police, is near Hastings and Carrall streets. Police are again reporting significant traffic impacts, including a street closure on Hastings between Carrall and Columbia. Tap the link in bio to read more.
