EDCertain tracks define an era, and Skrillex’s “Kyoto” is one of the clearest examples
Released in 2011 on his Grammy-nominated Bangarang EP and featuring rapper Sirah, the track became instantly recognizable for its explosive drop and the now legendary vocal line: “Yo Skrill, drop it hard!”
The song blended dubstep, drumstep, and electro house with distorted guitar textures, helping shape the aggressive bass sound that dominated the early 2010s.
More than a decade later, the track is still shaking festival stages. During a recent B2B with ISOxo at Niteharts Festival 2025, Skrillex dropped the Skrillex & Virtual Riot VIP edit of “Kyoto,” a heavier rework that has mostly lived in live sets and fan recordings.
Moments like this show the full circle of bass music: a pioneer revisiting one of the genre’s defining records while a new generation pushes the sound forward.

LEWe set the new record in North America for most lasers at a concert/show/curated event with 330 lasers! The previous record was about 224! This was an absolute dream come true to get to do at our yearly “Snow Day” Chicago show! We had lasers shooting in every direction. North, south, east, west, up, down, a fully closed off perfect funnel/upside down cone, and even lasers that are safe to shoot at the crowd! So much love to our production team for bringing this vision to life and executing it flawlessly ❤️

Back in 2012, Skrillex made a brief cameo in Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph, appearing as the DJ during the 30th Anniversary Party scene inside Fix-It Felix, Jr.
His animated character was designed around his signature look from that era, including the half-shaved hairstyle, thick-rimmed glasses, and all-black outfit. Disney animators even updated the model after Skrillex reportedly insisted that he would only wear black tennis shoes.
His involvement in the film went beyond the cameo too. Skrillex also produced the original track “Bug Hunt” for the Hero’s Duty sequences, while a Noisia remix of the song appeared on the official Wreck-It Ralph soundtrack.
Reports from the film’s production also said he was excited to be part of a movie built around video game culture, which makes the cameo feel even more fitting.
