EDCertain tracks define an era, and Skrillex’s “Kyoto” is one of the clearest examples
Released in 2011 on his Grammy-nominated Bangarang EP and featuring rapper Sirah, the track became instantly recognizable for its explosive drop and the now legendary vocal line: “Yo Skrill, drop it hard!”
The song blended dubstep, drumstep, and electro house with distorted guitar textures, helping shape the aggressive bass sound that dominated the early 2010s.
More than a decade later, the track is still shaking festival stages. During a recent B2B with ISOxo at Niteharts Festival 2025, Skrillex dropped the Skrillex & Virtual Riot VIP edit of “Kyoto,” a heavier rework that has mostly lived in live sets and fan recordings.
Moments like this show the full circle of bass music: a pioneer revisiting one of the genre’s defining records while a new generation pushes the sound forward.

KEBefore @skrillex was winning Grammys, he had already lived a whole different career as the lead singer of From First to Last. After dealing with vocal damage and surgery, he stepped away from the band and leaned fully into his growing love for electronic music.
With barely any fancy equipment — just a laptop, creativity, and a vision — he started producing tracks in small rooms. One of his first breakout tracks, “Equinox,” sampled his own vocals from his band days, while songs like his legendary “Mortal Kombat” remix helped introduce the world to his chaotic new sound. Then in 2010, Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites changed electronic music forever.
Within just two years, Skrillex went from experimenting online to winning a Grammy for his iconic “Cinema” remix with Benny Benassi and becoming one of the biggest names EDM has ever seen.
