Jean Dubuffet, Jardin d’Email, 1974, Concrete, glass fiber reinforced epoxy resin, polyurethane paint, 8 x 20 x 30 meter, Kröller Müller Museum, Otterlo. Jean Dubuffet is praised as an innovative artist who experimented with various new techniques and unusual materials. He coined the term Art Brut, also known as Outsider Art, in support of the art works made by children, prisoners, mentally challenged or disabled people, which he greatly admired. It inspired him to embrace a more spontaneous creative process and to break with traditional ideas of style and beauty. In the early 1960s, Dubuffet developed a new aesthetic, which he called: Hourloupe. In his drawings and paintings he reduced figurative elements to interlocking red, blue and black lines and shapes against a white background. Although the Hourloupe style consisted of paintings and drawings at first, from 1966 Dubuffet also began making reliefs, edifices and sculptures in this particular aesthetic. The first free-standing objects were made from painted polystyrene. Once the three-dimensional objects became larger he resorted to the use of polyester and glass fiber reinforced epoxy resin. The style culminated in the creation of large-scale outdoor works such as Jardin d’Email in the sculpture garden of the Kröller Müller Museum. The construction of the irregularly shaped garden, made out of reinforced concrete, was a technical tour de force. The two meter high plateau, with its black Hourloupe lines, also features two small sculptures that are meant as bushes and the iconic eight meter high tree. The tree is not just there to visualy overwhelm us, it also funstions as the entrance. You can climb a staircase and enter the dazzling landscape through a door in the tree trunk. Inviting visitors to sit and reflect, this historically significant sculpture will upend the traditional architecture of the art fair booth. ⁠ ⁠ -⁠ The work was conceived as part of the artist’s "Cabinet Logologique" (1967–69) housed within his "Closerie Falbala" (1973), the monumental architectural work near the artist’s studios in Périgny-sur-Yerres, France, that stands as his largest. sculptural achievement. His sculptures feel like anti-monuments—clumsy on purpose, cheerfully crude, and defiantly unserious in all the right ways. They reject polish, reject logic, and kind of dare you to stop trying to make sense of it all. Which, let’s be honest, is its own kind of genius. Ironically, this show is at Pace—but that’s a different story. #dubuffet #jeandubuffet

It was with questions such as these in mind that the French artist Jean Dubuffet traveled to the Sahara Desert in the late 1940s. Having just recently become re-dedicated to making art after a ten-year hiatus, Dubuffet hoped the trip would help him shake off the cultural influences he believed were inhibiting his artistic vision. He carried with him on the trip several journals and sketched the landscapes, creatures and scenes that he encountered. Under the theory that it would help him reconnect with his primal creative impulses, he imitated the style of the Arabic Saharan natives, whose art he considered pure and raw, and uninfluenced by cultural prejudices. At one point during this trip, he offered pencils and paper to an Arabic native he met in the desert and encouraged him to draw. The man imitated the style of the drawings Dubuffet had made in his journal. But it was a dual mimicry: a local imitating a foreigner’s imitation of the local style. Somewhere in this anecdote lurk profundities about how culture is created, about the reasons humans make art and about the ways style can be influenced.
