There’s no doubt, dummies (pacifiers) are a very handy tool. They’re cute and they can help soothe instantly.. But it doesn’t matter if they’re made of plastic or if they are made of rubber.. dummies do have a negative impact on facial, jaw and airway development and the teeth! Do dummies make the teeth crooked? The answer is yes. More specifically, they can cause; Anterior open bite- when the front and bottom Teeth are pushed outwards. Narrow high palate- when the roof of the mouth is higher than normal and the airway is narrow, resulting in a narrow airway. Prosterior crossbite- when the front teeth are an overbite, extending over the bottom teeth but the molars are an underbite, meaning the bottom molars protrude further into the cheek than the top molars. Narrow intercuspal width of the maxillary arch- when the width between the top molars is narrower than it should be. The concern when it comes to airway development is the narrowness that dummy use causes to the palate which extends to the airway. Narrow jaws = narrow airway. Ultimately, when the dummy is in the mouth, the tip of the tongue can not sit resting on the roof of the mouth (we talk about that a lot here don’t we!) - it’s just SO important ! Without this natural palate expander (aka- the tongue) in the right place it’s really difficult to get proper development happening. Parents- We’ll wrap up by saying no you’re not a bad parent if you use or have used a dummy. Every situation is different and certainly there are benefits to using a dummy… … and when it comes to development, luckily there’s a lot we can do to get development pointing in the right direction, especially if we address it as early on as possible. . . . #dummy #pacifier #dummyuse #byebyebinky

It can feel very daunting removing the dummy / pacifier The nhs recommends getting rid of the dummy by 12 months as it can create problems with teeth & impact speech development Before getting rid of the dummy restrict how much your little one is using it & reduce their usage to just sleep time only If you are going through this process with your toddler, it can help to create an imaginative scenario to make it easier for them. Such as the dummy fairy whereby you collect all of the dummies place them in a box for the fairies to take to all the new babies. You can make this a really positive experience with your toddler becoming so grown up Or you can exchange all the dummies for a special toy The best way to get rid of the dummy is to go cold turkey & you may experience a few tricky nights but this will be very short lived providing you stay consistent Your little one is likely to need extra support during this transitional period & I would recommend to use a responsive approach to enable your little one to self soothe without the use of the dummy Your little one will adapt very quickly & consistency is key Comment below 👇 SLEEP to hear how it is possible for a full restful night sleep without the dummy

1095 days of loving his dummy 🥹🧚🏻‍♂️❤️💫 It hasn’t been easy, even just reducing and limiting when Albert would use the dummy was a challenge. Why now? The gap in his teeth is getting bigger, I feel that he is ready & he totally understands now. BUT do not compare and put pressure on yourself … it is a big deal but I’m here to chat if you have any questions. I also wrote a blog when we did something similar for Teddy at 3 years old too. EVERY child is different- looking back Ted just got on with it whereas Albert is finding it a little difficult which is impacting on his sleep and emotions. But each day we are seeing improvements 💪🏻❤️ The link for my blog is in my BIO 💫 #dummy #dummyfairy #seperation #bigboy #parenting #parentingtips #parentingadvice #parentinghacks #blogger

DOES HAVING A DUMMY MEAN BAD TEETH? Short answer: NO 🤗 Here are some tips we want you to know for using a dummy so it causes the least amount of interference: •Try to limit the amount you use a dummy to only sleeps and unsettled times. •Wean by around 2 years of age •We recommend staying in size 0. There is no need to get bigger sizes as your baby grows, this is a myth! •Flat small teat are best, avoid using the typical “cherry” teat •When it comes to dummies with a chain, choose a light weight option and avoid the heavy animal, and beaded ones! Our dummy of choice is the @curaproxaustralia soothers (as seen in this video) You can use our code for $$ OFF ‘TeachingTeeth’ 💖 The Curaprox soothers were designed by orthodontists and peadiatric dentists to minimise the negative effects that other dummies can cause. https://curaprox.com.au/shop/baby Let us know if you use a dummy or not in the comments 👇✨ #dental #dentist #dentistry #teeth #tooth #babyteeth #babydevelopmenht #dentaldecay #childrensdentistry #toothfairy #dentalcare #dentistlife #childrensdental #fluoride #funfacts

This is something we had been avoiding for AGES 😬 Trav was dummy OBSESSED - although he has a blankie as well, the two were very much associated together and he'd need his dummy whenever he was tired, upset or slightly emotionally dysregulated. We've noticed his teeth and bite have been affected by his dummy and research shows this will self-correct if the dummy is removed before they turn 3. We had a few weeks left before that deadline so it become top priority! After we did the below, we had a few tough days of Travis asking for his dummy (especially at sleep time) and him crying when we told him it was gone. Putting him down to sleep also became (and still is) trickier as he doesn't have the dummy to soothe him and help him quieten down. But in less than 7 days he stopped asking for his dummy altogether. He still sleeps super well once he is asleep and continues to sleep through the night 🙌🏻 So what did we do? We invited the dummy fairy to our house 🧚‍♀️. We prepped Trav for this and on one Saturday morning we decorated the chosen rock in the garden with special flowers for her. Trav left his dummy there before his nap and when he woke up a very special gift was waiting in place of his dummy. We told him the dummy fairy was coming because he was almost 3, and had just become a big brother so he was officially a big boy who didn't need his dummy. He asked if she was going to take it to the moon so we just rolled with that theory 🤣. We stuck to it and every day got better until the dummy wasn't a thing anymore! #toddlerparenting #dummyfairy #motherhoodunplugged #motherhoodjourney #dummy

Getting rid of Alayla’s dummy was something that I knew I had to do when I started to notice gaps in her teeth and the dummy smile starting to form I didn’t want to permanently damage her drawer and her adult teeth and the way that we did it was go completely cold Turkey but if you can’t then first get rid of it during the day then we know at naptime and then get rid of it during the night time🤍🤍 #toddlerteeth #dummy #toddlertips #momtips #toddlermom

It’s been a journey to help our 4.5yr old say goodbye to her dummy, but this is what worked for us… I never minded her having it, but I noticed her teeth were starting to be affected, so we gently began to limit when she could use it. First we stopped it in the car, then she wasn’t allowed it during the day at home, until it was only for sleep. We always framed it around the Dummy Fairy’s “rules,” and that one day, when she was ready, the Dummy Fairy would come with a special gift in exchange for her dummies. This week she decided she was ready. We told her she’d need to sleep three nights without it, and on the fourth night the Dummy Fairy would visit. Night one brought lots of tears (and me lying beside her until she fell asleep), night two brought anger (she even threatened to put a spider in our bed 😅), but each night she slept through. By the third, although she was frustrated, she knew the drill. On the fourth night, we placed all her dummies in a basket, and the Dummy Fairy came to take them, so she could give them to babies who needed them. In return, she left two gifts: a sparkly pink riding helmet and a glitter pearl lamp. Noa was enamoured & so proud of herself 🥹 What I’ve learnt is that things go smoother when we follow our kids’ lead. Instead of forcing it, we listened, supported, and gave her something to work towards. And I think that made all the difference ❤️ If you’ve been through this too, I’d love to hear what worked for you — it’s always easier when we share the journey xo #dummyfairy #gettingridofthedummy #sayinggoodbyetothedummy #toddlermum #aussiemun #melbournemum #horseridingmum #herviewfromhome #thebump #bumpdate
