I see posts every day referring to the mini educator as a “shock collar” and while it does send an electrical pulse, it’s not a sharp one. The stim sensation from an e-collar is blunt stimulation that feels like a TENS unit, not like a shock from sticking a fork in an electrical outlet. As you can see, I can sit comfortably with a TENS unit stimming my muscles, turned up substantially higher than my dog’s collar ever is. I notice it, and it doesn’t feel “good” per-se, but it certainly doesn’t hurt. It’s just there.
If an owner is properly using an e-collar, it’s not because they’re “lazy” and it’s certainly not abusive - it’s just what works best for that owner and their dog. The idea that every dog will respond well, and see effective behavioral modification, from exclusively using positive reinforcement is flawed. Some dogs need tools. Some dogs don’t. Making blanket statements and fear mongering people out of using tools because YOU don’t know how to use them properly or because they weren’t what your dog needed, as a trainer is absurd. If you’re in this industry because you love dogs, you should be using everything at your disposal to improve their lives - and their owners lives.

He knows this is the “fun collar”, that we’re about to go off leash, hiking, or do some activity together outside.

Is what people who don’t understand how E-COLLARS work say 🤫
E-collars give me the ability to allow my dogs the freedom they were made to enjoy! 🐶 🏔️ I can maintain a consistent form of communication at all times, even when they’re off leash.
They also allow me to be more clear in my expectations, both in commands and around the house! 🏠 I can calmly and clearly say “no” or “come” while applying a low level stim, instead of getting frustrated or shouting if they don’t respond.
Dogs are nonverbal, 🔇they communicate physically and visually. 🐕 👀 They become accustomed to tuning our words out because we speak two totally different languages. However through proper training, the ecollar enables us to attach consistent meaning to our commands and verbals, no matter the circumstances.🗣️ Think of the ecollar like a cellphone with a human-to-dog translator. 👱🏽♂️📱🐶
In training, timing is vital to ensure your dog knows exactly what you’re asking. The ecollar allows me to give immediate feedback and be much more precise in my communication ☎️💬
A lot of people against ecollars will say “you can just use positive reinforcement with treats and toys.”, 🧸 and this is where we start. But we need a plan 🅱️.
Dogs know when that when the leash is off, you no longer have physical control over them.
So what happens if your dog slips out the front 🚪, the back gate, or their collar? What happens when they’d rather chase the 🐿️ or 🎾 into oncoming traffic, or approach a dog that doesn’t look friendly, than take your treats? 🍬 The number 1 reason to train your 🐕 is to keep your them safe, and ecollars allow me to do just that.

While buckles are convenient, this dog’s prong collar isn’t doing an efficient job.
As explained in the video, there is no drawstring-like capability to tighten the collar by each link to make the correct kind of contact with the dog’s neck. Instead, it’s simply pulling the whole collar with each correction, putting only the pressure on the throat area and making very minimal contact with the rest of the neck. While it’s a great idea, it doesn’t work effectively. Skip the fancy buckles and grab a quick release Herm Sprenger instead!
