KAE-collars have a bad reputation in the dog training industry. Let’s address some common misconceptions around this training tool ⬇️
1. They’re only used as punishment
🚫 When conditioned correctly, e-collars are layered over known commands, and become a neutral stimulus that primarily acts as another cue for your dog to complete that command. Think of it as a “tap on the shoulder”.
2. They shock your dog
🚫 A well made e-collar is actually a TENS unit, similar to devices used in human physical therapy. They deliver mild muscle stimulation, not an electric shock, and can be adjusted by 100 different levels.
3. They’re only useful for recall
🚫 E-collars can also be used for boundary training, addressing unwanted behaviors, and communicating at a distance. They act like an invisible extension of your leash.
4. Any brand is fine
🚫 There are plenty of cheap and poorly made “e-collars” available on the market - including some that actually WILL shock your dog. To avoid causing harm or confusion, you should only ever use a reputable brand. Our favorite is @ecollartechnologies 🐾
5. They’re the “easy way out” of training
🚫 When used correctly, e-collars require a lot of precision, fine-tuning, careful trial and error, and lots of boring & repetitive drills. Conditioning an e-collar properly takes a skilled and confident handler.
