🌍 ECOSYSTEM 🧠 DEFINITION An ecosystem is a self-sustaining structural and functional unit of nature in which biotic (living organisms) and abiotic (physical environment) components interact through energy flow and nutrient cycling. 👉 Term coined by A.G. Tansley (1935) 🌱 COMPONENTS OF ECOSYSTEM 🔹 1. Abiotic Components (Non-living) • Physical factors → Light, Temperature, Rainfall • Chemical factors → Water, Soil, Nutrients (C, N, P, etc.) 🔹 2. Biotic Components (Living) • Producers (Autotrophs) → Plants, algae (photosynthesis) • Consumers (Heterotrophs) → Herbivores, carnivores, omnivores • Decomposers (Saprotrophs) → Bacteria, fungi (nutrient recyclers) ⚙️ FUNCTIONS OF ECOSYSTEM 🌿 1. Productivity • Rate of biomass/organic matter production • Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) → total photosynthesis • Net Primary Productivity (NPP) = GPP – Respiration • Determines energy availability to higher trophic levels 🔄 2. Decomposition • Breakdown of dead organic matter • Steps → Fragmentation → Leaching → Catabolism → Humification → Mineralisation • Releases nutrients back to soil/water ⚡ 3. Energy Flow • Unidirectional → Sun → Producers → Consumers → Decomposers • Follows Lindeman’s 10% law (only ~10% energy transferred to next trophic level) • Explains pyramids of energy, biomass and numbers ♻️ 4. Nutrient (Biogeochemical) Cycling • Cyclic movement of nutrients between biotic & abiotic components • Types → Gaseous cycles (C, N) & Sedimentary cycles (P, S) • Maintains soil fertility & ecosystem stability 🔑 PROPERTIES OF ECOSYSTEM • Open System → continuous exchange of energy & matter • Dynamic & Temporal → changes over time (ecological succession) • Self-regulating (Homeostasis) → maintains equilibrium via feedback mechanisms • Trophic Organization → food chains, food webs, ecological pyramids • Interdependence → strong link between organisms & environment • Resilience → ability to recover after disturbance • Carrying Capacity → maximum population an ecosystem can support 🌍 TYPES OF ECOSYSTEM • Natural → Forest, Grass
