A staff member gave Ruscha a private audience with Johannes Theodor Baargeld’s “Untitled (Beetles),” which Ruscha described as akin to “getting an audience with the pope.” 62 years later, #EdRuscha’s major retrospective is on view at the Museum—including “Parking Lines,” a painting made back in car-centric Los Angeles replacing the insects with rows of automobiles. Ed Ruscha was Google Earth before Google Earth. He photographed LA like a historian from the future. Nothing staged. He just photographed the city as it was happening in real time capturing streets, signs, buildings, and the city’s infrastructure over decades. His archive, known as the “Streets of Los Angeles” project, includes a half a million images making his archive project the most extensive in history. In 2020 @edruschaofficial donated them ALL to @gettyimages making them available to the public forever. To learn even more, please check out my interview with Ed on YouTube.
