ISEdith Piaf lost her only child when her daughter was just two years old.
The little girl was named Marcelle. Edith gave birth to her at 17 from her boyfriend Louis Dupont, while still living in near poverty. They rented cheap rooms, moved constantly, and fought all the time over money. To survive, Piaf sang on the streets of Paris and often had to leave her daughter with her mother.
Marcelle was a weak child and was often sick. In 1935, she contracted meningitis. Edith had no money for good doctors. She barely left her daughter’s bedside, held her in her arms, prayed, and promised God anything if only the child would survive.
But Marcelle died in her arms.
She was only two years old.
Piaf did not even have enough money to pay for her own daughter’s funeral. She had to borrow money from friends. After Marcelle’s death, Edith could barely speak about her child and spent the rest of her life blaming herself for working too much and not being there enough.
Many biographers later wrote that this tragedy was what created Piaf’s desperate dependence on love. She clung to men, feared loneliness, made scenes, and suffered after every breakup — because she had already lived through the worst loss of her life.
