Let’s break ‘em down: 1️⃣ Shooting in JPEG. Listen, if you’re still letting your camera make all the decisions, we gotta talk. RAW gives you the flexibility to edit in such a deeper way. No weird color shifts, no crushed shadows, just full control for your creative edge. Unless your shooting photos in bulk that just need minimal editing, RAW gives you so much more to work with and makes your work look 10x better. 2️⃣ Skipping selective edits. If you’re just sliding around the global adjustments, you’re missing out. Masking and brushing in Lightroom is where the REAL magic happens. A little light tweak here, a bit of contrast there, clarity, and it’s a game-changer. 3️⃣ Chasing trends instead of building a ✨signature look. ✨ Your personal editing style is what makes people recognize your work instantly. This isn’t about sameness, it’s about consistency. You can change the mood in a photo by tweaking composition, changing location, poses, etc, but my greens will always be consistent tho, for example. 3 mistakes I made as a beginner photographer (so that don’t make the same ones 👇) 1. I didn’t really understand light. I knew golden hour looked good, but I’d shoot the same way in every kind of light and just hope for the best. It’s definitely something that comes with experience, and you never really stop learning! But I wish someone had told me what to look for — and how each type of light has its own strengths and weaknesses if you know how to use it. 2. I over-edited everything. Lightroom was a playground and I went all in on the moody vibes at the start — max contrast, heavy clarity, super desaturated tones. Everything looked very dramatic... but also kinda overcooked. The upside? I learned to edit on Lightroom from scratch before I even knew presets existed (didn’t discover those ‘til I started shooting weddings). These days, I’ve learned that natural tones and subtle tweaks usually hit harder. 3. I let my camera decide where to focus. I was a bit of a settings nerd and got into shooting in manual mode early on, but for some reason, didn’t realise I could control exactly where my camera focused. It kept locking onto the wrong thing and I’d get so frustrated. Total game changer once I figured out spot focusing and continuous autofocus! 📸If you’re just starting out, know this: we all make mistakes. I made a lot — and that’s why I created an online course to help you skip the confusion, the random googling and the YouTube deep dives, and shoot with confidence from the start.
