Here’s the secret: there’s actually a formula.
When you break down what we intuitively call “cool,” it’s actually a balance of what I like to call the three forces of cool: class, edge, and ease.
Let me explain:
Class comes from classic, timeless, or polished pieces that ground the outfit — like tailored blazers, sleek flats, or a beautifully draped blouse.
Edge is what keeps it modern and interesting — sunglasses, unique bag shapes, unexpected textures, modern silhouettes.
Ease keeps it from looking forced or overstyled — relaxed jeans, half-unbuttoned blouses, undone hair, casual bags.
Here’s the thing: it’s not about balancing them all evenly. Some outfits lean more classic but add a modern edge with accessories. Others are super relaxed but grounded with polished pieces.
When the three forces are in balance, people don’t know why your outfit works — they just feel it. That’s what we call “effortless.”
Looking cool isn’t reserved for celebrities or a certain age. As a stylist, this is something I work on with clients from all backgrounds. It’s about contrast and balance — and once you see it, you can’t unsee it.
This framework is inspired by Tibi’s ‘Classic/Modern/Chill’ philosophy — one of the clearest ways I’ve ever seen style articulated. I’ve adapted it into a tool I use for personal styling and real-life outfits.
