The heartbreaking truth behind Maester Aemon’s final words 💔🐉 Egg... I dreamed that I was old." 💔 Let’s talk about one of the most heartbreaking lines in the entire series and the tragic lore behind Maester Aemon’s final moments. If you're wondering why Aemon was calling out for "Egg," you are about to see this story unfold in the upcoming series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Maester Aemon wasn't just a wise old man at the Night's Watch; he was Aemon Targaryen. He was offered the Iron Throne but quietly refused it, choosing to honor his maester's vows. Because he stepped aside, the crown passed to his younger brother, Aegon V Targaryen—affectionately known to Aemon as "Egg." Egg was the lovable, bald-headed squire to Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk). He traveled the realm, lived among the smallfolk, and eventually became King Aegon "The Unlikely." Aemon and Egg were incredibly close. To ensure his brother's rule wasn't threatened by his own claim to the throne, Aemon took the black and went to the icy edge of the world, effectively exiling himself out of love and duty. But outliving your entire family is a terrible curse. From the frozen isolation of Castle Black, Aemon was forced to helplessly listen to the ruin of House Targaryen. He heard the news of his beloved Egg dying in the fiery Tragedy at Summerhall. Years later, he received the news of the Mad King's fall and the slaughter of his relatives during Robert's Rebellion. He couldn't leave to protect them. He could only watch from afar as the dragons died out. When Aemon finally passes away at the age of 104, his mind drifts back nearly a century to his childhood. In his final breath, the weight of a hundred years of grief, duty, and cold isolation melts away. He isn't a Maester anymore. He isn't a brother of the Night's Watch. He is just a little boy again, holding onto his baby brother, realizing that his long, painful century without his family was just a bad dream.

In Game of Thrones (Season 5, Episode 7), Maester Aemon’s final, delirious words are, "Egg, I dreamed I was old". "Egg" is the affectionate nickname for his younger brother, King Aegon V Targaryen, whom Aemon was close to. Aemon was reminiscing about his youth, mistakenly believing his time as a dying old man in Castle Black was a dream. #aknightofthesevenkingdoms#akotsk#gameofthrones#hboseries

The legacy of House Targaryen in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and Game of Thrones quietly flows through characters like Maekar, Aemon, and their distant kin. Prince Maekar Targaryen represents the iron-willed branch of the royal line — a warrior prince whose blood would eventually produce both kings and unlikely heroes. Through his son Aemon, who chose duty over the throne to become a Maester of the Night’s Watch, the Targaryen name survives not in crowns but in wisdom and sacrifice. Even far from power, their Valyrian blood continues to shape the fate of Westeros. By the time of Game of Thrones, Maester Aemon stands as the last living link to the old royal dynasty, guiding men like Eddison “Dolorous Edd” Tollett at the Wall. While Edd himself is not a Targaryen, his service beside Aemon highlights how the fallen dragonlords still influence the realm from the shadows. From Maekar’s stern legacy to Aemon’s quiet honor, the Targaryen bloodline proves that true power isn’t always worn as a crown. 🎬 A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms ⚔️ 🎬 Game of Thrones

Maester Aemon Targaryen in Game of Thrones is a symbol of wisdom, sacrifice, and quiet strength. Born Aemon Targaryen, he was the son of King Maekar and brother to King Aegon V, which meant he once stood close to the Iron Throne. However, he chose a life of knowledge and honor instead of power, becoming a maester and later joining the Night’s Watch. To avoid political conflict and temptation, Aemon gave up his royal identity and lived in anonymity at Castle Black. Blind and extremely old, he still guided Jon Snow with deep insight, teaching him that “love is the death of duty.” When he learns that Daenerys is his family and the last known Targaryen, he feels both pride and regret for never meeting her. Aemon dies peacefully while traveling south, leaving behind a legacy of loyalty, humility, and moral clarity. He represents what a true Targaryen could be—not driven by fire and conquest, but by wisdom and honor.

Maester Aemon Targaryen, the elder brother of Aegon “Egg” Targaryen, served as the maester at Castle Black in loyal service to the Night’s Watch. He was one of Lord Commander Jeor Mormont’s most trusted advisors. Born into House Targaryen, Aemon was believed to be the last living Targaryen in Westeros for many years. He was the great-uncle of Daenerys Targaryen and, unknowingly, the great-great-uncle of Jon Snow. Widely regarded as wise, compassionate, and deeply honorable, Maester Aemon acted as a moral compass within the Night’s Watch. He served faithfully, offering guidance and counsel to multiple Lords Commander. To prevent political strife and bloodshed, he chose to renounce any claim to the Iron Throne, dedicating his life instead to duty and service. Though he set aside his birthright, by lineage he was a true heir to the Iron Throne.

In "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms," Egg (later known as Aegon V Targaryen) and his brother Aemon share a deep and complex bond. As brothers, they're vastly different - Egg's adventurous and impulsive, while Aemon's more cautious and duty-bound. Despite their differences, they're fiercely loyal to each other, often looking out for one another in their own ways. Their relationship is a beautiful aspect of the story, showcasing the Targaryen family dynamics. Aemon's protective of Egg, trying to keep him safe from harm, while Egg often drags Aemon into his wild adventures. The tension and camaraderie between them add depth to the narrative, making their interactions both heartwarming and intense. 🎬 A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms X Game Of Thrones @moods.movies

Follow for more Egg is not an orphaned stable boy, but a Targaryen prince. He’s only bald because he shaved his head so no one could recognize him by his silver hair. He is the youngest son of Prince Maekar and his wife, Dyanna Dayne. He will eventually become King Aegon V, known also as “Aegon the Unlikely,” because the chances of him ever inheriting the Iron Throne were so low. Egg has three older brothers: Daeron, derisively nicknamed “the Drunken,” Aerion, and Aemon, who we learn is sent to the Citadel to be a Maester. Aemon will grow up to be the same Maester Aemon (Peter Vaughan) who mentors Jon Snow (Kit Harington) at the Wall in Game of Thrones. On his deathbed, he calls out for Egg. Without going deep into spoilers, Egg somehow finds himself King after a number of tragedies befall the Targaryens, killing everyone ahead of him in line for the Iron Throne, except Aemon. Aemon decides to stay a Maester rather than take the Iron Throne. Aegon V is also canonically the grandfather of the Mad King Aerys. That means, yes, Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) is his great-granddaughter and Jon Snow is his great-great-grandson. And who does Egg make Lord Commander of his Kingsguard? None other than Ser Duncan the Tall, who does become one of the most illustrious knights in Westerosi history. Series : A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1, Episode 3: The Squire
