👉 How to correct mistakes in Egg Tempera Sometimes, when you work with egg tempera, a painted area doesn’t cover well or the color just doesn’t feel right. This happens to everyone — and there is a simple, safe method that I personally use. Take a cotton pad lightly moistened with egg emulsion and gently wipe away the excess paint. Or you can slightly moisten the painted area with a brush dipped in emulsion, and then carefully remove the softened paint with a dry cotton pad. Avoid scraping the surface or washing it with water. Both methods are risky and can easily damage the gesso (levkas) layer. This gentle correction helps you fix mistakes without harming the ground and keeps your work clean and professional. @icon_experience

I teach this technique and many others in my Bird Painting workshop- you can check it out in my profile. Many years ago I studied egg tempera, and picked up this technique there (although it’s much easier to use it with watercolor, gouache or acrylic). Egg tempera is a pre-renaissance technique that uses egg yolk as a binder and is incredibly delicate - any excess bit of water sort of eats a hole in the surface that is then difficult to fix, so you get used to using the minimum amount of water. This painting is watercolor and gouache on vellum. Much thanks to the amazing bird photographer @luksth for letting me use your bird portraits for reference

I never shared the actual video on socials. for some reason I thought it was embarrassing, not like this one 😝✌🏽 Thank you @alexeja @ad.ibiza @mondogaleria (who helped me and had the nerves and patience to deal with my scattered brain) 🙈 i love and miss you to the moon and back ❤️

It began as a little test piece, to see if I still enjoy the process of working with oils. And now, having finished this little mussel I can honestly say that it’s been a trial and error kind of project. Just as when I began with egg tempera… so many mistakes but ultimately worth it in the end, if just for the sense of having done the model justice, and perhaps more… maybe even made her glow once more. I’ve loved portraying this little mussel. It’s going to sit quietly in the studio now while it dries. And no doubt I shall not be able to leave it alone, and will inevitably tweak at it. And so it will always be with all my ‘models’, when I could have simply left it on the beach! Happy Tuesday all, A x Ps and yes that’s paint I wiped off my lips (nothing new there).
