By copying a number of Egon Schiele drawings, students approach the extensive course content as artist-researchers, exploring linear phrasing. Nothing says #FreakyFriday quite like a blistering case of radiodermatitis. In Egon Schiele’s depiction of Erwin von Graff, the doctor holds his right arm upright and bent diagonally against his chest, as if attempting to keep it sterile. The tip of his right ring finger is bandaged, and his hands, left forearm, and face appear darkened. Although there has been much speculation about the potential cause of this discoloration, family records confirm that he suffered from severe radiodermatitis, a side effect from repeated, unprotected exposure to radiation during X-ray therapy. Fortunately, Graff recovered from this condition. His medical experience expanded from radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer to encompass various specialties, including gynecology, pathological anatomy, and surgery. (I definitely recommend the Vogue interview, where she talks about the mermaid tail/Moncler jacket/bustle you can see here! No condom coat on display, sadly.) The incredible @nadiastaceyhairmakeupdesign did the hair for the movie and you should go and read the Allure interview where she talks about it — the Egon Schiele painting she references as being an inspiration is 💡🧠 #PoorThings
