Impression material
Impression materials are used to copy the teeth and surrounding oral structures by creating a dental impression poured with dental plaster to fabricate a dental cast. This procedure provides a tridimensional and accurate mouth replica, allowing dental work even in the absence of the patient.
Impression materials can be classified as follows:
Based on Use
For primary impressions, e.g., alginate, impression compound, elastomeric putty.
For secondary impressions, e.g., light body elastomers and zinc oxide eugenol.
Based on Setting Reaction
Reversible (physical): impression compound, impression waxes, agar.
Irreversible (chemical): alginate, impression plaster, elastomeric impression materials.
Impression compound
It is a thermoplastic, rigid, and reversible impression material (it can be reused in the same patient if an impression needs to be repeated). It is also known as a modeling compound.
Types
Type 1: Low fusing impression compound. Available as sheet, rope, and stick.
Type 2: High fusing impression compound, also known as tray compound. It is used for making impression trays.
Composition
Rosin 30 parts
Resin 30 parts
Carnauba wax 10 parts
Stearic acid 5parts (gives plasticity)
Talc 75parts (provides hardness)
Coloring agents

1. Define impression
Impression is a negative replica of oral structures used to make a positive model or cast.
2. Classification of impression materials
A. Based on elasticity:
●Elastic – Alginate, Agar, Silicone, Polyether
●.Inelastic – Impression compound, ZOE paste, Impression plaster
B. Based on use:
●Preliminary (e.g., alginate)
●Final (e.g., elastomers)
●Corrective (e.g., zinc oxide eugenol)
3. Ideal requirements of impression material
●Accurate reproduction of surface details
●Dimensional stability
●Good flow
●Biocompatibility
●Adequate working and setting time
●Easy to remove without distortion
●Compatible with gypsum products
4. Most commonly used impression materials
●Alginate (irreversible hydrocolloid) → For preliminary impressions
●Agar (reversible hydrocolloid) → For crown/bridge in some cases
●Elastomeric materials (silicone, polyether) → For final precision impressions

●Polysulfide
●Condensation Silicone
●Addition Silicone (VPS)
●Polyether
Best for accuracy: Addition silicone (Vinyl Polysiloxane)
Most rigid: Polyether
Impression techniques
1.Single mix – One consistency used
2.Double mix – Heavy + light body simultaneously
3.Putty-wash – Two-step method (common in crowns)
4.Custom tray – For controlled uniform thickness of material
Common errors in impression making
1.Air bubbles → Improper mixing
2.Distortion → Delay in pouring cast or tray movement
3 Poor detail → Saliva contamination or improper drying
Viva must-know fact
1.Alginate should be poured within 10–12 minutes to avoid syneresis and imbibition.
2.Elastomeric impressions can be poured even after 24 hours due to better stability.
Disinfection of impressions
1.Rinse under running water
2.Spray or immerse in disinfectant (e.g., 2% glutaraldehyde or 1% sodium hypochlorite)
3.Rinse again before pouring
