Born on June 19, 1856, in Bloomington, Illinois, Elbert Green Hubbard was an American writer, publisher, artist, and philosopher shaped by humble beginnings, success in sales, and a deep commitment to beauty, work, and individual effort. He founded the Roycroft artisan community in East Aurora, New York, embodying the Arts and Crafts movement. He died on May 7, 1915, at age 58, aboard the RMS Lusitania, sunk by a German submarine in the Atlantic.
History & Life
Raised in a modest family, Hubbard worked as a traveling salesman for the Larkin Soap Company, retiring wealthy at 36. Inspired by William Morris, he established Roycroft Press in 1893, which grew into a thriving community of craftspeople producing handmade books, furniture, and goods. He edited and largely wrote The Philistine and The Fra magazines, lectured widely, and championed a philosophy blending radicalism, conservatism, efficiency, and joyful labor.
Achievements
Universally recognized as a leading voice of the American Arts and Crafts movement and a master of motivational prose, Hubbard celebrated hard work, loyalty, and personal responsibility with witty, epigrammatic style.
Key works include “A Message to Garcia” (1899), the Little Journeys to the Homes of the Great series (1894–1910), and numerous essays in The Philistine.
His writings sold millions, influenced business culture and self-improvement, and Roycroft became a model for artisan communities. He also produced beautiful handmade books and crafts while promoting the dignity of labor.

Raised in Hudson, Illinois, he had early success as a traveling salesman for the Larkin Soap Company. Hubbard is known best as the founder of the Roycroft artisan community in East Aurora, New York, an influential exponent of the Arts and Crafts movement.Among Hubbard's many publications were the fourteen-volume work Little Journeys to the Homes of the Great and the short publication A Message to Garcia. He and his second wife, Alice Moore Hubbard, died aboard the RMS Lusitania when it was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine SM U-20 off the coast of Ireland on May 7, 1915.
