Some appreciation for The Electrifying Mojo, the Detroit radio DJ who turned multiple generations of people onto the most important music coming out of the 70s, 80s and 90s. What was great about Mojo was that he’d play whole albums, which at that time was pretty revolutionary. Mainstream radio was dominated by pop and payola, but Mojo would deep dive into an artist and play LPs front to back long before streaming on demand was invented. He was the gospel for me and my contemporaries in Detroit, and techno would not be the same without his musical influence.

📣 MOTOWN, Detroit, MI - Psychedelic Soul Era Sound (Exhibit) - The period from 1967 to 1975 marked Motown’s bold Psychedelic Soul era, when the label expanded beyond its signature love songs to embrace experimentation and socially conscious storytelling. Guided by producer Norman Whitfield, artists like The Temptations helped define the sound with Grammy-winning hits such as “Cloud 9” and “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone”. Beyond Inspired!!! 🔥 Thank you for the warm welcome and being such a formidable story teller @j_fro90 🖤✊🏽 My Story, God’s Glory!

the Belleville Three. In my last video, I talked about how the German band Kraftwerk inspired them— HOWEVER— Let’s talk about the man who beamed alien funk into Detroit’s airwaves… and rewired a generation’s ears:
The Electrifying Mojo. how did Black teenagers in the suburbs even hear Kraftwerk? Or Prince deep cuts? Or 10-minute Parliament freakouts? The answer is Mojo. Also known as Charles Johnson, he developed his music curation skills while on active duty in the Air Force, DJing and importing records while stationed in the Philippines. In 1972, The Electrifying Mojo became a radio show on WGPR—the first Black-owned TV station in the United States. Although his show started at 10pm, the real magic was the Midnight Funk Association, where Mojo invited listeners to join him on cosmic journeys through electro and funk—Parliament-Funkadelic, The Gap Band, Zapp—
blended seamlessly with imported synth sounds from Kraftwerk, Gary Numan, Yazoo, and beyond. It was psychedelic. It was Afrofuturism. “He was an underground cult hero,” Juan Atkins said. “We would listen to him every night.” Often speaking over swirling spaceship effects, his on-air monologues weren’t just iconic—they were motivational. “If you would like to become a member of the Midnight Funk Association now you may stand…. If you’re in water, make waves. If you’re driving get ready to dance in your seats. Get ready to honk your horns. Get ready to flash your lights….. Show solidarity with the MFA…… Nobody better like you.” *No copyright infringement intended. Detroit invented techno. And every Memorial Day weekend, over 100,000 people show up to remember. In the 1980s, three high school kids in Belleville, Michigan were listening to a late-night Detroit radio show hosted by a DJ called The Electrifying Mojo. He played everything. Kraftwerk. Parliament-Funkadelic. Prince. @juan.cybotron.atkins, @derrickmay, and @kevinsaunderson took those sounds and fused them into something the world had never heard before. Atkins gave it a name. Techno. By the late '80s, the music was massive in Europe. Berlin. London. Amsterdam. But in Detroit, it stayed underground. In 2000, the Detroit Electronic Music Festival launched at Hart Plaza. The city signed the contract one day before opening. The first major electronic music festival in America. Free admission. Hart Plaza was packed. What followed was chaos. Name changes. Financial losses. Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson both tried to run it. Both nearly went broke. The festival almost disappeared. In 2006, local promoters Paxahau took over and brought back the name Movement. They stabilized it. Grew it. Built it into one of the most respected electronic music festivals in the world. In 2016, Kraftwerk finally played Movement. The German group that inspired three teenagers in Belleville performed at the festival those teenagers made possible. A robotic voice declared from the stage: "Detroit is so electro. Germany is so electro." @movementdetroit 2026 runs May 23-25 at Hart Plaza. 20th anniversary under Paxahau. Over 115 acts across six stages. Carl Cox. Dom Dolla. Sara Landry. Richie Hawtin. Carl Craig. Kevin Saunderson. The pioneers and the next generation. Together. Detroit gave the world techno. Movement makes sure the world never forgets where it came from. 👉 Follow @thepernateam for news, real estate, events, and all things Metro Detroit and Michigan #detroit #movement #techno #electronicmusic #music 📹 2000 DEMF footage courtesy of @kenny_dreadful
