SAI create a medium by melting damar resin and beeswax for encaustic painting, one of the oldest techniques in art history.
The process takes several hours, and the technique itself is highly labor-intensive.
Yet its durability is remarkable—works from around 2,000 years ago still remain in excellent condition.
I made a mistake this time, and it took me four hours. I’ll be sharing it in two parts—please take a look.
美術史最古の技法「エンカウスティーク」を行うために、ダンマル樹脂とビーズワックスを溶かしたメディウムを制作しています。
この工程は数時間かかる上、制作自体も非常に手間がかかります。ですが、その耐久性は数百年とも言われており、約2000年前の作品が今も良好な状態で残っているほどです。

ANThe finish line is in sight and my heart is pumping with excitement as lay down the last few marks on this encaustic landscape painting!
“Field Companions” was inspired by a familiar scene in Loudoun County, Virginia. I often feel a quiet reassurance when I watch cattle sharing the fields near my home, and I wanted to capture that feeling. Using soft, layered encaustic, I tried to show the connection between the animals and the land. Their easy togetherness reflects the comfort we find in familiar places and company. I invite you to step into this scene and feel the same calm and sense of fellowship that make these rural moments so restorative.

In August we will be hosting “Fire & Form” organized by Rochester’s Working With Wax group. This exhibition, juried by Regina B. Quinn, celebrates the versatility, texture, and transformative nature of wax-based practices and its unique and pronounced history in NYS. We’re excited to help celebrate Rochester’s outsized role in the recent re-invigoration of this medium!
The submission process is now open to recent 2D and 3D work created with wax, including encaustic, cold wax, and mixed media where wax is a key element.
