The Scaffolded Writing process (developed by Tools of the Mind) encourages students to plan their writing before putting it on paper. They then draw a line to stand for every word in their message and go back to represent the sounds they hear within each other word. Depending on a scholar’s developmental level, they may only represent each word with initial sounds, initial and ending sounds, or begin to add medial sounds. As students develop more advanced phonics skills, they will begin to use spelling or word patterns in their writing. In this video, I am modeling the process for my students before they engage in an independent writing task. Note: In our classroom, we call irregularly spelled words “Heart Words”. This method has helped my students learn to read and spell High-Frequency and Sight Words, teaching them to sound out the words that are phonetic… and the parts that aren’t are tricky parts we learn by heart!
