Over-Engineering a compass ••• The humble compass is too boring. This is why I spent 3 days designing this 6 linkage system to draw a circle instead. I think it’s way cooler than a compass. The only problem is it can only draw circles this size. Oh, well worth it. ••• #engineer #mechanicalengineering #mechanicaldesign #mechanism

Watch how one rotation turns into 625 rapid spinning outputs. In this video, we explain how a 1:625 gear train multiplies rotational speed, what happens to torque and efficiency, and how to build a multi-stage gear setup to achieve this extreme speed amplification. What you'll learn in this video: How a 1:625 gear ratio is achieved (stage-by-stage breakdown). The speed vs. torque trade-off with clear numeric examples. Practical tips for building, measuring, and keeping the system safe. A 1:625 gear ratio means every single rotation of the input shaft produces 625 rotations at the output shaft. Total gear ratio in a compound train is the product of each stage's ratio - for example, four stages of 1:5 give. To get extreme speed you stack multiple stages (compound gears or planetary stages). Each stage multiplies RPM but divides torque by the same factor (ignoring friction and losses). Numeric examples (step-by-step arithmetic): If input = 1 RPM, output = 625 RPM (1 x 625 = 625). If input = 10 RPM, output = 6,250 RPM (10 x 625 = 62,50 + 6250). If input = 60 RPM, output = 37,500 RPM. Work shown: 625 x 60 = 625 x (6 x 10) = (625 x 6) × 10 = 3,750 x 10 = 37,500. Torque trade-off example (ideal, no losses): If input torque = 10 N-m, output torque = 10÷625 = 0.016 N-m. So you get huge speed but the usable torque at the output becomes very small - that's the core trade-off. Practical notes & tips: Use multiple small-ratio stages (e.g., 1:5 x 1:5 x 1:5 × 1:5) or a planetary gearbox for compactness. Watch alignment, bearing choice, and lubrication - at high RPM vibration and heat become critical. Expect real-world efficiency losses (meshing friction, bearing drag). Plan for cooling and measure RPM with a tachometer. Safety: enclose fast-rotating parts, balance rotating masses, and never run a high-RPM output without proper guards. #gearratio #engine #engineering #engineer #fyp

💪 The concept of working smarter rather than harder has been around since at least the 1930s when industrial engineer Allen F. Morgenstern coined the phrase while studying how to increase production efficiency without increasing physical effort. In modern manufacturing, automated conveyor loading systems can process up to 20 bags per minute, work that would normally take a team of workers hours to complete manually. This factory worker in Turkey clearly took the concept to heart, rigging up his own system so he could supervise operations with a glass of Turkish tea in hand, arguably the most efficient worker on the planet. This independent engineer just built the ultimate human-machine interface from the ground up. Weighing in at a massive 11,000 pounds, this colossal mechanical hand operates by perfectly mimicking human movement in real-time. The pilot wears a custom control rig strapped directly to their arm and fingers, creating a seamless connection between the operator and the machine. Instead of using complicated levers and joysticks, the giant hydraulic digits replicate the natural motions of the user. To demonstrate its raw kinetic force, the creator actually punched the front grille of a modern electric vehicle, delivering enough power to instantly deploy the car's airbags. This setup acts as a highly functional proof-of-concept for the future of scaled-up, human-piloted robotics. By making heavy machinery this intuitive to control, we are looking at massive potential upgrades for construction mechs and remote disaster relief operations. The gap between human capability and heavy-duty mechanical power is shrinking rapidly. — — — — — Would you test drive a rig like this? 💬 Follow for more Technology updates

You’re a Software Engineer and can’t work from home anymore True story, I was once working from home and went to Thailand randomly. But I didn’t tell the company In was working for (it was a train wreck of a company anyway). But they laid me off whilst I was there. To my surprise they said I could finish early, and not work my notice period and I had to send the laptop the next day 😅 Ib - @ellisflurry (follow them!) software engineer edition. I watched their reel and it reminded me exactly of this old engineer I used to work with so felt compelled to make a SWE version [coding, programming, working from home]

The Zhaozhou Bridge in Hebei, China has been standing since 605 AD — through 10 major floods, 8 wars, and a 7.6 magnitude earthquake with its epicenter 40 kilometers away. ⠀ It is still in use today. 1,400 years later. ⠀ Engineer Li Chun built it during the Sui Dynasty using a design so far ahead of its time that Europe didn’t figure out the same concept until the 19th century. ⠀ The main arch spans 37 meters across the Xiao River in a shallow, flattened curve rather than a steep semicircle — making the road surface gentle enough for horses and carts to cross without slowing down. ⠀ But the real genius is the four small relief arches carved into the shoulders of the main arch on either side. ⠀ When the river floods and water pressure builds against the bridge, those openings let the flood pass straight through instead of hammering the structure. ⠀ They also cut the total weight of the bridge by 15% — removing 700 tons of unnecessary stone before a single cart ever crossed it. ⠀ The 28 limestone slabs forming the arch aren’t fused solid either. They’re locked together with iron dovetail clamps that let the arch flex and adjust as the ground shifts beneath it. ⠀ A Tang Dynasty official who inspected the bridge 70 years after it was built wrote: the four small arches break the anger of the roaring floods and protect the bridge mightily. ⠀ He was right. They still do. ⠀ Follow @explaining.architecturee for structures built to outlast everything 👇 ⠀ #architecture #engineering #ancientchina #bridges #history

The high-precision process of industrial laser engraving on a cylindrical metal component. A focused laser beam is shown etching a fine, numerical scale—ranging from 0 to 320 degrees—onto a black-coated dial ring. This non-contact technique uses intense heat to vaporize the surface material locally, creating permanent and highly accurate markings that are resistant to wear. To ensure uniform results across the entire 360-degree circumference, such systems typically utilize a rotary attachment that synchronizes the part's rotation with the laser's output. This specialized application is critical for manufacturing precision instruments, automotive parts, and aerospace components where clear and durable labeling is essential. #technology #engineering #engineer #idea
