⚠️ WHAT IS EES? ⚠️
EES stands for ‘Entry Exit System’ which is a new automated computer system that tracks when non-EU nationals (that includes us Brits) go in and out of most of Europe. It’s set to replace stamps.
⚠️ WHEN DOES THIS COME IN? ⚠️
EES begins on 12th Oct but there’s a 6 month gradual rollout and so it’s likely that not many places will be up and running straight away.
⚠️ HOW WILL I KNOW IF IT’S AFFECTING MY JOURNEY? ⚠️
Some places have said it will be up and running on Sunday including Estonia, Czechia and Luxembourg but even there they haven’t confirmed whether it will be for every single flight. It’s going to take a while to see how it plays out...
⚠️ WHAT’S AN EES KIOSK? ⚠️
To help speed things up, airports, train stations and ports have installed EES self service kiosks. This allows you to ‘pre-register’ so that when you get to border control, they’ll simply swipe your passport and all the needed info for EES will be come up.
⚠️ WHAT IF I DON’T USE AN EES KIOSK? ⚠️
If you can’t find one, it’s not working or need extra assistance, you would just go to border control as normal and they will do a manual EES check with you if it’s required.
⚠️ WHERE WILL I FIND AN EES KIOSK? ⚠️
Ask yourself: at what stage of your journey does your passport normally get stamped? Wherever that is, the EES kiosks are likely to be just before it.
For flights from the UK, this would be after you land but before you go through to arrivals.
For the Eurostar at St Pancras, the ferry at Dover and the Eurotunnel at Folkestone however, this would be done before you leave the UK.
For all return journeys, you would do the checks before you board your transport home.

So a quick recap for you:
🇪🇺 WHAT IS EES?! 🇪🇺
EES stands for Entry/Exit System and it’s a new digital border system that’s replacing passport stamps as a way of tracking non-EU nationals who are coming in and out of the Schengen zone.
🇪🇺 WHAT’S THE SCHENGEN ZONE? 🇪🇺
It’s 29 countries in Europe - basically, it’s gonna impact your travel to most of Europe. The three key places who aren’t doing EES are the UK, Ireland and Cyprus.
🇪🇺 WHAT DOES EES INVOLVE? 🇪🇺
You’ll be asked for a face scan, fingerprints and you could be asked some additional questions about your trip as well - such as where you’re staying, how long you’re staying, the purpose of your trip and whether you have enough funds.
Whilst they said this digitisation would ‘speed things up’, the reality is it’s been slowing things down quite a bit…
🇪🇺 IS THERE AN APP TO SPEED THIS UP? 🇪🇺
If you’re travelling to Sweden and Portugal, there is an app called ‘Travel to Europe’ where you can pre-register with but as you saw here, Porto weren’t accepting that data yet!
🇪🇺 HASN’T THIS BEEN IN PLACE FOR A WHILE ALREADY? 🇪🇺
It was supposed to be gradually rolled out over the last six months so you may have experienced it already but as of 10th April, it’s mandatory EVERYWHERE.
Or at least, it should be!!

🛂 Indian travellers, OCI card holders & NRIs - don’t get caught off guard at the border!
1️⃣ EES – Schengen Area
Heading to France, Italy, Germany, Spain, or the Netherlands? Your entry & exit are now digital, tracked using biometrics (face & fingerprints).
💡 What this means:
• You cannot skip the biometric check at the airport.
• Refusing can lead to denied entry or being sent back at your own cost.
• OCI card holders & NRIs are included - your travel is tracked the same way.
✅ Reminder: EES doesn’t replace your Schengen visa , you still need a valid visa.
2️⃣ ETIAS – Europe’s future travel pass
Currently, Indians, including OCI/NRI passport holders, still need a Schengen visa, so ETIAS doesn’t apply yet.
⚠ From late 2026, if you also hold a visa-exempt passport, ETIAS may be required.
• Airlines can refuse boarding, and border officers can deny entry if ETIAS is missing.
💡 Tip: ETIAS cannot be done at the airport, so apply in advance if it applies to you.
3️⃣ UK ETA – United Kingdom
If you don’t have a UK visa, Indian travellers, OCI holders, and NRIs must get a UK ETA before flying.
❌ No ETA = airline refusal or denied entry at the border.
✅ You can’t get it at the airport - it must be done online beforehand.
Bottom line:
• Check entry requirements before booking your trip.
• Make sure your visa, ETA, or ETIAS (if applicable) is ready.
• Skipping this can ruin your trip and cost a lot of money.

✈️ WHERE AM I FLYING? ✈️
I flew from Tallinn to London Luton on Mon 13th Oct.
✈️ WHAT HAPPENED AT TALLINN AIRPORT? ✈️
I went through security as normal and went to border control.
There was no queue but this was because my flight was delayed by 3 hours (more on this soon!) so people had a lot of time to go through.
✈️ IS THIS THE SAME FOR OTHER AIRPORTS? ✈️
Sadly not - someone told me at Luxembourg they had to queue an hour to pass these checks before boarding their flight home.
We’ve also seen queues on each side at airports in Prague so definitely leave some extra time and go straight to border control to check out the situation.
⚠️ DON’T leave it to last minute ⚠️
✈️ WHAT HAPPENED AT LONDON LUTON AIRPORT? ✈️
Nothing! All your EES checks are done before you board your flight.
✈️ WHAT’S A MANUAL EES CHECK? ✈️
It’s where you haven’t pre-registered any information at a kiosk and instead a border officer takes you through your EES checks including a face scan, fingerprints and some questions.
✈️ HOW WAS MY EXPERIENCE? ✈️
Quicker on the way back - only 2 mins instead of 4 - so it does show it gets sped up versus when you first register. However, it still feels quite slow and I can see how queues are forming elsewhere.
