Why do I say that from today until the end of the year, women in the EU symbolically work for free?
 Because if you’re a woman, that means your work isn’t valued the same as a man’s, mainly because of the EU’s gender pay gap, which is still 12% and that’s 1.5 months of salary lost every year. Not because women work less. Not because they are less qualified. But because their work is systematically undervalued. When I talk about the pay gap, people often say it’s “just numbers”. 
But these numbers shape real lives: 
the promotions women don’t get,
the unpaid care they carry,
the leadership roles they’re shut out of,
the financial security they lose. Equal Pay Day exists to remind us of this reality:and why change matters. The good news? The EU is finally pushing for more pay transparency, so hiding unequal pay becomes harder. But we’re not there yet. So today isn’t about guilt, it’s about awareness, fairness, and choosing to speak up. Because no one should “work for free.” Not today. Not ever. #equalpayday #closethegap #euequalpayday

Denn Frauen verdienen in Deutschland im Schnitt immer noch knapp 16 Prozent weniger pro Stunde. Im Reel zeigen wir euch, wie Deutschland im EU-Vergleich abschneidet. Allerdings ist ein niedriger Gender-Pay-Gap nicht unbedingt ein Zeichen von Gleichstellung. Das zeigt sich besonders deutlich am Beispiel Italien. Dort ist die Lohnlücke mit 5,3 Prozent vergleichsweise niedrig, aber es sind nur 57 Prozent der Frauen erwerbstätig - in Deutschland sind das 78 Prozent. "Entscheidend ist die Frage, wer überhaupt berufstätig ist", sagt Katharina Wrohlich, Professorin an der Uni Potsdam und Leiterin der Forschungsgruppe Gender Economics beim Deutschen Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung (DIW) Berlin. In Ländern mit niedriger Frauenerwerbstätigenquote gingen vor allem Frauen mit höheren Löhnen arbeiten, während Mütter häufiger zu Hause blieben, die anderswo vielleicht schlechter bezahlte Teilzeitjobs ausübten. Dazu trage auch ein traditionelleres Rollenbild bei. Wie ist der deutsche Gender-Pay-Gap vor dem Hintergrund der hohen Frauenerwerbstätigkeit zu beurteilen? Wrohlich verweist auf skandinavische Länder wie Schweden. "Dort sind beide Indikatoren besser." In Schweden gehen 80 Prozent der Frauen arbeiten, der Gender-Pay-Gap ist liegt mit etwa 11 Prozent deutlich unter dem deutschen.
