HAEric Stoltz was originally cast as Marty McFly in Back to the Future. He filmed for five weeks. Apparently, Stoltz’s Marty was more in existential crisis and too serious and wasn't playing the comedy that director Robert Zemeckis had envisioned for the film.
Finally Zemeckis made a bold call: recast the lead. Michael J. Fox (who was Zemeckis' first choice to play Marty) signed up. Fox had to work around his filming for Family Ties and set upon an exhausting schedule to work on both.
Zemeckis has said, replacing Stoltz was one of the hardest things he had ever done. Zemeckis and Stolz have been asked about the experience over the years and both don't seem to hold any grudges with one another. Stoltz has yet to appear in a Zemeckis film.
What would Back to the Future have been like with Stoltz? It's kind of hard to imagine how the film would have been had he played Marty McFly.
