CUHenry Omenai: The Nigerian man who woke up after 20 years in coma (Credit: @omolokun1)
There has only been one Nigerian that had been in a state of COMA for more than 20 years. That Nigerian was Mr. Henry Omenai, a former director at Shell Petroleum Development Company. Mr. Omenai was the first husband of Senator Daisy Ehanire Danjuma - the wife of Lieutenant-General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma - Nigeria's former Chief of Army Staff. The thing is, Mr. Henry Omenai went into a coma for 24 years from 1994 till 2018 after a helicopter crash on an official trip from Lagos to Abuja.
Specifically, Henry Omenai - the most senior Nigerian director of Shell Petroleum Development Company in 1994 - was travelling from Lagos to Abuja that year when the helicopter conveying him on the trip crashed. All the other Shell staff on the helicopter died while Mr. Omenai was rescued, though he was in a state of coma. He remained in coma in a London hospital from 1994 until he woke up in 2018 (all at the expense of his employer Shell).
He was then put in a hospice and he died in 2020, ostensibly from COVID. That said, to the surprise of many Nigerians, Mr. Omenai’s ex-wife Senator Daisy Danjuma and her new husband Lieutenant-General Yakubu Danjuma both visited her ex-husband Mr. Henry Omenai when he was in coma in a London hospital and later at the hospice on several occasions.
PS: Mr. Omenai woke up from coma in 2018 but remained in a persistent vegetative state (PVS) until his death two years later in 2020.
