MAEthiopian jazz
also referred to as Ethio-jazz, is a blend of traditional Ethiopian music with jazz, combining the pentatonic scale-based melodies of Amharic music with the 12-tone scale and instrumentation of western music. Over time the genre has grown to include elements from other genres such as afrofunk, soul, Armenian jazz, and Latin rhythms.[1] The genre originated in the 1950s with Armenian refugees such as musician Nerses Nalbandian, who created a fusion of Ethiopian and Western music while working at the National Theatre.[1] Ethiopian jazz was revolutionized by @astatkemulatu in the late 1950s. Astatke is considered the father of Ethio-jazz music.

Mulatu Astatke (Amharic: ሙላቱ አስታጥቄ; also written Astatqé on French releases) is arguably one of the most influential and legendary musicians from Ethiopia. During the 1960’s, he studied music abroad in London, Boston, and New York. He then returned home to Ethiopia armed with a love for jazz and Latin music. There he blended Ethiopian traditional music with the Latin-jazz he was so fond of to create a unique hybrid he called “Ethio-jazz”.

EVNot only the father of Ethio-jazz but one of the few artists who reshaped how Ethiopia’s music connected to the world. His sound emerged in the late 1960s, when Addis Ababa was buzzing with optimism and global influence. Mulatu came back from his studies abroad carrying ideas from Latin America, the US, and Europe, and fused them with ancient Ethiopian modes that date back thousands of years.
His music became the heartbeat of what’s now called the “Golden Age” of Ethiopian music, inspiring countless local bands and shaping the country’s sonic identity. Beyond that, his later collaborations with groups like The Heliocentrics helped bring Ethio-jazz back to international attention in the 2000s, influencing everyone from hip-hop producers to film composers.
