Foo Fighters recorded “Everlong” earlier that year with Dave Grohl on drums, after he re-tracked most of the album’s drum parts himself during the sessions. The song was released as a single in August 1997 and quickly became the band’s defining track, reaching No. 3 on the Billboard Alternative chart. By the time of this Letterman appearance, Taylor Hawkins had officially joined the band and was now responsible for executing Grohl’s studio blueprint live.
That’s the part people miss. Grohl is a drummer first. The parts on “Everlong” are stamina-heavy, tightly structured, and central to the song’s momentum. Handing those to another drummer requires trust at a different level. Hawkins didn’t simplify them. He drove them with the same urgency and snap, night after night, turning a studio performance into a 25-year live standard. From 1997 forward, the song belonged to him on stage.
Grohl built it. Taylor carried it.
