Black liberation in America was not carried by one voice, it was built from the ground up. Grassroots movements powered the Civil Rights Movement, and Black women were at the center of that organizing. Ida B. Wells. Fannie Lou Hamer. Ella Baker. Diane Nash. Angela Davis. They weren’t side notes. They were architects of change. #apafram🔴⚫️🟢 #blackhistorymonth #blackhistorymatters

Angela Davis and Kwame Ture sit at the crossroads of Black freedom struggle; two towering voices whose work reshaped the civil rights and Pan-African movements. Davis, a lifelong abolitionist, exposed how prisons, policing and capitalism operate as an intertwined system of social control. Ture, formerly Stokely Carmichael, renamed himself after African leaders Kwame Nkrumah and Ahmed Sékou Touré, dedicating his life to the political unification of African peoples and the wider fight against global colonial power. This Black Journal conversation from 1973 captures them breaking down the foundations of American capitalism with sharp clarity. They challenge the idea of “free enterprise,” arguing that the U.S. economy is dominated by monopoly corporations whose wealth dwarfs the realities of ordinary people. For Black communities, they insist, the promise that small business ownership equals liberation is a deliberate distraction from a system built on exploiting the labor of the many for the benefit of the few. The clip stands as a reminder that the struggle for racial justice has always been tied to wider questions of political power, economic inequality, and the global structures that shape life for the oppressed. #AngelaDavis #KwameTure #CivilRights #PanAfricanism

🌟✊🏿 February marks the beginning of Black History Month! ✊🏾🌟 After spending time traveling and lecturing, Davis returned to teaching. She served as a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where she taught courses on the history of consciousness. Her interests in prisoner rights led her to found Critical Resistance, an organization working to abolish the prison-industrial complex. Davis is the author of several books including Women, Race, and Class (1983) and Are Prisons Obsolete? (2003). https://nmaahc.si.edu/angela-davis Join us in commemorating Black History Month by recognizing, celebrating, and honoring the remarkable contributions of Black individuals throughout history and in our lives today. 🎉🌟 #BlackHistoryMonth #CelebratingExcellence #HonoringLegacies #apm #lisajfoster #angeladavis

Happy Revolutionary Birthday, Angela Davis, born January 26, 1944 Today we give you your flowers for a lifetime of fearless truth-telling, radical love, and undeniable commitment to Black liberation. You taught generations that freedom is a practice, that justice is collective, and that our movements must be rooted in care as much as courage. We honor your legacy and we keep building the world you have always demanded we fight for. Happy Birthday, Dr. Davis. #AngelaDavis #BlackLiberation #freeangela

#blackhistory #blackhistorymonth This image brings together six women who played major roles in Black liberation, community organizing, and political education during the 1960s and 1970s. Angela Davis, Kathleen Cleaver, Denise Velez, Afeni Shakur, Assata Shakur, and Elaine Brown were central figures in movements focused on racial justice, political self-determination, and community survival. Their work included organizing grassroots programs, developing political education, addressing police violence, advocating for prisoners’ rights, and building mutual aid initiatives. Many of these efforts were foundational to broader civil rights and Black Power movements, even though women’s leadership was often overlooked or minimized at the time. Several of these women faced surveillance, arrests, trials, incarceration, or exile. Others navigated internal challenges within political organizations while continuing to push for structural change. Their contributions extended beyond protests and speeches into day-to-day organizing that sustained communities under pressure. This image documents an important part of American history and highlights the role of women whose leadership helped shape political movements that continue to influence conversations about justice, equality, and civil rights today.
