When exercise becomes TOXIC: • forcing yourself to go to the gym after eating unhealthily • working out solely to burn calories • feeling like a failure if you didn’t workout that day • choosing exercise over social activities • spending 2+ hours at the gym per day • experiencing distress if you weren’t able to exercise that day • exercising at inappropriate times and places • continuing to workout despite injury or illness • resenting going to the gym • struggling to keep up with your current exercise routine • having an “all or nothing” approach to exercise • using exercise as a form of punishment • thinking you have to spend hours in the gym burning calories if you want to be healthy Doing any of these ^^^ behaviors is guaranteed to make you miserable & resent working out. I’ve started using the word MOVEMENT in addition to working out / exercising because it’s easy to get into the mindset of “I have to go to the gym today, and if I don’t go, then that means I didn’t workout today.” Our bodies require physical activity, but that doesn’t HAVE to be at a gym. Other ways to incorporate movement as part of your daily lifestyle: walking your dogs, hiking, walking to your favorite coffee shop, taking stairs instead of elevators or escalators, using a standing desk, parking farther away, dancing, going to a park, playing sports like tennis with a friend.
