🟦 Mental Health in the Construction Industry Why It Can’t Be Ignored The Australian construction industry is facing a serious mental health crisis. ⬜ Construction workers are six times more likely to die by suicide than from a workplace accident, with young workers at particularly high risk. ⬜ Under WHS laws, mental health is not optional; employers have a legal duty to manage psychosocial hazards, just like physical safety risks. ⬜ In construction, these hazards commonly include: • Bullying, harassment, and poor workplace relationships • Excessive workloads, unrealistic deadlines, and a lack of worker control • Unsafe or traumatic job conditions 🟦 Managing these risks requires a practical approach: ⬜ Identify hazards, consult workers, and implement effective controls. ⬜ Strong planning, respectful leadership, clear communication, and safe job design make a real difference. 🟦 Supervisors don’t need to be mental health experts, but they do need to act early. Knowing the signs, starting supportive conversations, connecting workers to help, and staying engaged can save lives. 🟥 Free, confidential support is available 24/7, including Mates in Construction, Lifeline, Beyond Blue, and NSW Health Mental Health Line. 🟦 A mentally healthy site is a safer, more productive site. 🟦 Looking after people is not just the right thing to do; it’s a WHS responsibility.

The mental health strain facing the construction industry has reached epidemic levels. Crews are working longer hours, under higher risk, with less recovery time and the impact shows up on job sites every day. We developed short, practical e-learning modules for construction teams focused on early warning signs and real-world response. Not therapy. Not check-the-box training. Built to support safety, retention, and performance. "It's only a matter of time before a Mental Health First Aider takes their employer to court - because they weren't properly protected." - Stuart Mace During and after the pandemic, many organisations trained Mental Health First Aiders. They raised awareness. They showed intent. But now the question is different: what does 2026 need to look like? Globally, we're seeing legal cases emerging around psychosocial risk and employer responsibility. The shift is clear. It's no longer just about having support in place. It's about whether you've properly assessed risk, protected your people and put the right systems around them. Good intentions are not a defence. If you work in construction leadership, HR or health & safety, this episode will challenge how you think about Mental Health First Aid and what comes next. 🎧 Listen or watch 📺 the full episode - link in our bio 🔹 Thank you to our sponsor, GKR Scaffolding (@gkrscaffolding), for supporting this series and helping us share our mission of improving health and wellbeing in construction. One of the biggest myths in workplace wellbeing is that leaders need all the answers. You don't. "The answers are already in your workforce. You just need to want to listen to them and then act on what you hear." - Stuart Mace You need the courage to ask better questions, genuinely consult your workforce, and take shared steps forward. Most organisations already have the insight they need sitting in project teams, site cabins and offices across the business. The challenge is not knowledge - it's follow-through. If you work in construction leadership, health & safety or HR and you're wondering where to start with psychosocial risk or workplace wellbeing, this episode is for you. 🎧 Listen or watch 📺 the full episode - link in our bio 🔹 Thank you to our sponsor, GKR Scaffolding (@gkrscaffolding), for supporting this series and helping us share our mission of improving health and wellbeing in construction. "You're not responsible for somebody's mental health outside of work… but you are responsible for the environment you create whilst they're at work." - Stuart Mace One of the biggest barriers we see in organisations is fear. Mental health can feel too big, too personal, too complicated. Leaders worry they'll be expected to fix everything happening in someone's life. And when it feels overwhelming, progress often stalls. But this isn't about taking responsibility for what happens outside of work. It's about managing the psychosocial risks within your control - workload, clarity, culture, relationships, leadership behaviours. When organisations move from good intentions to intentional action, the conversation becomes far less scary and far more practical. If you work in construction leadership, HR or health & safety and want to understand what your responsibility really is (and what it isn't), this episode is for you. 🎧 Listen or 📺 watch the full podcast - link in our bio 🔹 Thank you to our sponsor, GKR Scaffolding (@gkrscaffolding), for supporting this series and helping us share our mission of improving health and wellbeing in construction. For many years, workplace safety focused on what we could see — physical hazards, equipment, and environments. But workplace safety has evolved. Today, psychological health is now recognized as a workplace safety responsibility under WHS legislation. This means organizations must manage risks such as excessive workload, fatigue, bullying, and unmanaged stress — just as seriously as physical hazards. Because when psychological safety is compromised, decision-making, focus, and overall safety performance are affected. Strong safety cultures understand that protecting people goes beyond compliance. It is about creating an environment where workers can perform safely, sustainably, and confidently. Safety is no longer just about preventing injury. It is about protecting the whole person. #WorkplaceSafety #WHS #Leadership #SafetyCulture #PsychologicalSafety #ConstructionSafety #SafetyLeadership

Psychosocial safety isn’t new. It’s just real safety. Too often, businesses treat psychosocial risks as “soft” or optional. The truth? They’re just as real — and just as dangerous — as machinery, heights, or slippery floors. I’ve spent years working with Safety and HR teams across Manufacturing, Construction, Transport, Technology, and Infrastructure helping them identify, manage, and control psychosocial hazards — because ignoring them isn’t just risky, it’s illegal. From stress, fatigue, and excessive workloads to bullying, conflict, and unsafe work design, psychosocial hazards are everyone’s responsibility. Every business must act — it’s not optional. Common psychosocial hazards include: • High or unmanageable workloads • Long or irregular hours / fatigue • Role ambiguity or conflict • Lack of control or autonomy • Poor organisational change management • Bullying, harassment, or discrimination • Poor workplace relationships • Low recognition or reward • Poor organisational justice • Exposure to traumatic events • Unsafe or poorly designed work environments • Inadequate systems, processes, or training Here’s the bottom line: your duty of care isn’t complete without managing these risks. I help businesses turn obligations into action — practical, compliant, and solid systems that protect your people and your business. Let’s turn your compliance into confidence — for your people and your business. Let's chat. #psychosocialsafety #riskmanagement #business #iso #safety #jumpconsulting

Safety isn’t just a policy. It’s a right. Every worker deserves to feel safe, protected, and heard. If something doesn’t look right, speak up. If a safety protocol isn’t being followed, say something. Your voice could prevent an injury or even save a life. Creating a safe workplace starts with awareness, accountability, and the courage to speak up. Have you ever spoken up about a safety concern at work?
