My top recommendations for fabric shopping in Japan! Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. Tbh my only regret is not buying more. These fabrics feel so much more special knowing I got them on the trip and I can't wait to make them into garments I love 💗 One word of caution is to remember that bolts in Japan are a lot narrower than in the States. The fabrics I purchased were all around 110cm wide, so I had to account for that difference and buy more than I would with a 60" wide bolt. Even so, the prices were really good and I got so many high-quality cotton fabrics with unique textures and patterns. It always feels like I’ve missed something with every visit I make to Japan. I usually stay in Ginza because it’s really central and the hotels are super nice/spacious. I finally did some fabric shopping in Nippori, and on days I felt overwhelmed with the constant retail/tourist trap areas, I went to visit shrines where I prayed for friends and family - naturally, you can’t pass a #Donki without going inside and browsing the thousands of beauty and body products. But the most incredible part of my #japansolotrip so far has been making new friends and having zero plans. I’ve only eaten at the conbini a few times, ramen maybe once or twice? And plenty of desserts in between. I’m looking forward to going back in January! Hoping to meet new buddies along the way. One thing no one ever talks about with their Japan reels and overconsumption postings, Japanese people are so polite and generous. I met so many new people on this visit and they were so selfless with their time and always with gifts in hand! (Ps when visiting Asia, never forget a gift the first time you meet someone - odds are they have one for you!) I was also able to visit an international university, critique students design work, and network with some net level design professionals. Naturally you under pack, and will always end up needing an extra checked bag ;) Akihabara is the spot for cheap luggage just sayin!
