SUFairlight Cove (aka Covehurst Bay) is in between Hastings and Fairlight. You can access it from Hastings but only at low tide. I haven't tried that because it looked daunting.
The other access is via the coastal path and, importantly, at your own risk. We climbed down from the car park on the Ore to Fairlight road. There are two ways to the dripping well...we went the wrong way, via the river bed.
The dripping well is magical. A favourite of the Victorians although I can't imagine them climbing down the river.
From there, put on your mountain goat shoes, and follow the stream. The last bit (from the coastal path down) involves a rope and a lot of mud but is worth it. You can wash off in the sea.
The beach itself is a nudist beach and is well used. But on a cold January day, we had it to ourselves.
It feels every bit like you're on a deserted island. And the climb back up certainly gets your heart pumping!

A sound that rewrote pop and hip-hop in the 1980s – and it’s a sample from a ballet by Stravinsky, the opening refrain from one of the final three acts of The Firebird.
So how did this sound come to feature in records by Michael Jackson, #DuranDuran Duran, New Order, #NWA, Kate Bush, Yes, the #BeastieBoys, and most famously in Afrika Bambaataa’s Planet Rock?
It was first sampled by Australian Peter Vogel and included as a preset in the original #FairlightCMI. The preset is called ORCH2. Vogel invented the Fairlight along with Kim Ryrie. The first comprehensive sampler, it could record and play back around a second of audio, transposed across a keyboard.
This was just enough to snatch that opening refrain from “The Infernal Dance of King Kastchei” in Stravinsky’s ballet. Transposed across a keyboard, it created a huge orchestral stab – a sound that had never before been available to pop, dance and hip-hop musicians.
It was adopted so quickly and so widely that NWA even joked about it being old and tired in 1989 in “Straight Outta Compton” – (Man that’s wack, everybody used that / Yo, why don’t you bring back the other track).
But when you next hear that sound, consider that it was originally composed and heard 112 years ago, when #Stravinsky first performed The Firebird here in Paris in 1910…
