I (@abaqus_model) completed a numerical simulation in Abaqus to reproduce the experimental behavior of a reinforced concrete column under combined axial and lateral loading, and it was fascinating to see how closely the model captured both the global load–displacement response and local damage patterns observed in the laboratory. The numerical model was developed and calibrated in Abaqus (SIMULIA) based on the experimental study conducted by Dr. Bahar and Sina Amirsardari at IIEES. This project aims to determine behavioral modification indices for earthquake-damaged reinforced concrete columns, providing better insight into their post-yield performance. Here’s what 15 minutes of simulation told me: → My first design would’ve failed at 12kg load → Adding 2mm thickness in the right spot = 3.2x safety factor → Still prints in same time, minimal extra material → Now I know it won’t snap when the belt motor kicks in This isn’t overkill. This is engineering. The difference between: ❌ “I think it’ll hold” ✅ “I know it’ll hold” Could you skip this? Sure. Will you regret it at 2am when it breaks mid-operation? Probably.
