In the last of my attachment series here is: fearful avoidant or what is sometimes called disorganized attachment. If you’ve watched my reels on anxious attachment and avoidant attachment and have said to myself “I’m both”— this is likely your attachment style. People with fearful avoidant attachment grow up with homes where a parent was both a source of love and fear. Meaning, they constantly had to walk on egg shells. Typically this was a highly reactive parent, who struggle to emotionally regulate. Other times it was a parent who didn’t yell at all but got cold and gave the silent treatment anytime they were upset. Our need as children is to have a predictable, and secure adult whose behavior we can trust. When we don’t get this we struggle to form healthy adult relationships. Our attachment style, while wired into our nervous system, is not fixed. We can all heal. Someone with fearful avoidant attachment needs to learn how to widen their window— or to expand their capacity for stress. Somatic practices, and self soothing is key here. Also being open and honest with close friends and partners will help them understand the *why* behind your behavior. When someone knows your background and triggers, they are in a better space to support you. One of the hardest parts of relationships for a fearful avoidant is how strong the reactions feel. Any change in a someone’s behavior will send off their internal stress alarm. Just as it did when they were children. They also struggle with “control issues”— an adaptation they used to make sense of an early world that was full of chaos and fear. Note: many fearful avoidants are diagnosed with OCD but this adaption at one time was the only way they could feel safe. Please share with anyone who feels both anxious AND avoidant in relationships. Fearful avoidants are usually in emotional turmoil. Many of them were taught growing up that showing emotion meant you were weak or too difficult. So they hide their emotions from the outside world. But inside is an emotional rollercoaster. They’re reacting to everything. And it doesn’t feel good. Their work is to learn to process their emotions so they are not blocking themselves from its wisdom. Only one person needs to go on the rollercoaster. This is a good thing to remember if you’re in a relationship with a fearful avoidant. #attachmentstyles #attachment #attachmenttheory #fearfulavoidant #healthyrelationships #disorganizedattachment #anxiousattachment #attachmentcoach #marriagecoach #healthymarriage #disorganizedattachment

⁉️Are you a really a fearful avoidant (FA) attachment style or could you be anxious preoccupied (AP)⁉️ Many confuse these two anxious attachment styles, but understanding the differences is crucial for your attachment healing journey. Anxious Preoccupied (AP): • Childhood Experience: Often report a good childhood but with inconsistent emotional attunement from caregivers. • Core Wound: Driven by a deep fear of abandonment. • Relationship Behavior: Tend to go to great lengths to maintain relationships, sometimes at the expense of their own well-being. Fearful Avoidant (FA): • Childhood Experience: Typically have experienced significant trauma or betrayal in early life. • Core Wound: Possess a profound fear of betrayal. • Relationship Behavior: May become avoidant in relationships after prolonged efforts to be seen, heard, and understood. During conflicts, they might react defensively or “bite back.” Distinguishing between these attachment styles is vital for personal growth and healing. Avoidant attachment is not a lack of feeling. It is the presence of too much. Too much intensity, too much closeness, too much exposure. So the body chooses distance as protection, silence as armor, and emotional shutdown as survival. It is pulling away from the very people you care about because connection feels like a risk you were never taught to take. It is wanting closeness while fearing what it might demand of you. It is sensing vulnerability and immediately retreating behind old walls you didn’t build but still live inside. Avoidant attachment hides in calmness, in logic, in independence. But underneath is a nervous system bracing for impact. A belief that needing someone makes you unsafe. A fear that intimacy will cost more than it gives. It is not coldness. It is self-protection learned too early and kept for too long. It is the habit of disappearing before anyone gets close enough to see the parts of you that never felt protected. If this feels familiar, you’re not detached by choice. You’re someone who learned that distance was safer than disappointment, that self-reliance was safer than trust, and that solitude was easier than being hurt again. Healing doesn’t begin by forcing yourself to open. It begins by understanding why you closed. 🖤 #psychology #foryou #fypppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp #foryoupage #avoidantattachment #relatable #viral #love #reels #makemefamous #savethispost #depression #bpd #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness
